Role Description

As a Production Network Engineer focused on Dropbox’s Infrastructure organization, you will play a crucial role in designing, deploying, and operating the large-scale networking systems that power our global platform. You will impact areas such as datacenter, backbone, and edge networking, while also driving improvements in automation, configuration management, and telemetry systems to increase reliability and efficiency.

In this role, you’ll partner with domain experts, software engineers, and cross-functional infrastructure teams to eliminate single points of failure, strengthen resiliency, and scale our production environment to meet the needs of millions of users. You will gain exposure to complex, global-scale infrastructure projects, collaborate with senior technical leaders, and help shape the future of Dropbox’s production network.

Our Engineering Career Framework is viewable by anyone outside the company and describes what’s expected for our engineers at each of our career levels. Check out our blog post on this topic and more here.

Responsibilities
  • Design, deploy, and operate Dropbox’s global production network across datacenter, backbone, edge, and cloud networking
  • Support operations and on-call coverage for the production network, ensuring high reliability and availability
  • Drive automation initiatives for network configuration, monitoring, and change management
  • Develop and improve network telemetry and observability systems to enhance visibility and reliability
  • Partner with global SMEs, software engineers, and operations teams to deliver scalable and secure infrastructure solutions
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (traffic, physical infrastructure, security) to support end-to-end network initiatives

On-call work may be necessary occasionally to help address bugs, outages, or other operational issues, with the goal of maintaining a stable and high-quality experience for our customers.

Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience in designing, deploying, and operating large-scale production networks.
  • Hands-on experience with datacenter, backbone and edge networking at scale.
  • Proficiency in core networking protocols such as BGP, OSPF/ISIS, MPLS and IPv4/IPv6.
  • Strong background working with major networking vendors (e.g., Juniper, Cisco, Arista).
  • Strong background in automation (e.g., Python, Ansible, or infrastructure-as-code tools).
  • Familiarity with monitoring, observability, or telemetry systems for network reliability.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with experience working on distributed global teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience contributing to or leading network architecture projects in datacenter, backbone, or edge domains.
  • Industry certifications such as CCNP/CCIE (Cisco), JNCIP/JNCIE (Juniper), or equivalent.
  • Track record of developing or extending network automation frameworks
  • Familiarity with cloud networking, traffic engineering, or peering deployments.
  • Experience driving security-related remediation at scale (e.g., protocol hardening, vulnerability response).
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
