Job Description

Job Summary

As a Motion Control Engineer II, you will design and develop control systems for our motion products using industry-standard motion control technologies. You will provide technical leadership on incoming critical projects, as well as support for existing customer applications. You will ensure that automation and control hardware for motion systems such as motors and drives, as well as accompanying software, meets required specifications and reliability and industry standards.

Job Description (Primary Responsibilities)

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure project success and timely delivery.
  • Creating and maintaining necessary documentation and driving best practices.
  • Acting as a subject matter expert and advisor. Teaching less experienced personnel design, development and problem-solving best practices. Engineering on-time delivery for new product designs.
  • Communicating with customers to understand and drive towards project requirements as well as commissioning fixturing depending on test criteria and specifications
  • Understand customers' technology and product roadmaps to identify future opportunities for Novanta. Collaborate with the New and Emerging Business team on new opportunities and transition late-stage opportunities to production.
  • Negotiate and renew contracts to ensure positive outcomes for all parties involved.

Skills

  • Tune brushless servo, stepper, and linear motors using advanced control theory, including position, velocity, and current loops, with precise adjustment of proportional, integral, feedforward gains, and filters.
  • Develop and implement motion control programs featuring coordinated multi-axis motion, S-curve acceleration, and trapezoidal velocity profiles tailored to application requirements.
  • Design printed circuit boards (PCBs) incorporating both integrated and discrete components, including high-speed interfaces, using industry-standard EDA tools such as Altium Designer.
  • Create comprehensive technical documentation, including assembly instructions, test procedures, and detailed test and analysis reports to support engineering and manufacturing teams.
  • Utilize lab instrumentation such as digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, and waveform/function generators; demonstrate strong technical learning agility and the ability to quickly master new tools, technologies, and industry knowledge.

Travel Requirements  

  • Limited visits to various customer locations for troubleshooting.

Physical Requirements

  • Regular use of hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Ability to see fine details, either unaided or using a microscope.
  • Occasionally lifting and moving equipment or materials.

Compensation and Benefits

  • The base pay for this position is $85,000–$130,000 per year depending on the geographic market.
  • Dependent on the position offered, annual bonuses and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of the compensation package.
