ML Research Intern will lead research on generative and predictive modeling for drug discovery, collaborate with various experts, and design scalable experiments.
About the Team
We’re a tight-knit team of proven drug hunters, deep learning researchers, and software engineers united by a common mission — drive AI innovation in biochemistry, discovering and developing groundbreaking therapies for patients suffering from severe disorders.
Genesis AI team is focused on developing foundation models for small molecule drug discovery by conducting fundamental research at the intersection of machine learning, physics, and computational chemistry, as well as engineering robust software systems that enable running large scale simulations and training generative and predictive AI models designed to learn from all kinds of molecular data, leveraging our cluster with 1000s of GPUs and 10,000s of CPUs.
About the Role
We’re looking for exceptional ML Research Interns interested in conducting cutting edge research in a fast-paced industry setting and drive forward our ML research agenda for generative modeling of molecular systems, which is instrumental to our mission.
As a ML Research Intern at Genesis, you will work alongside our ML researchers and engineers on a high-impact research project. Majority of our internship projects focus on validating new ideas and developing novel methods that improve AI capabilities of our GEMS platform, blending together techniques from cutting edge machine learning (denoising diffusion, equivariant architectures, self-supervised training of multi-modal models, RL-based alignment) and computational physics/chemistry (molecular dynamics, quantum mechanics).
Genesis is a highly-collaborative and cross functional environment, and you will work in close partnership with our exceptional engineers, researchers, and biochemistry experts.
You will
- Lead a research project, which will be broadly focused on a problem related to generative or predictive modeling of molecular systems.
- Navigate the latest deep learning literature, extracting insights from generative modeling in adjacent domains (language, images, 3D graphics, etc.), develop novel models and training techniques for molecular data, and communicate your findings to the team.
- Carefully design and run experiments at scale to validate most promising approaches and hypotheses.
You are
- Currently enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or related fields.
- Strong background in machine learning, deep learning, and/or related areas.
- A deep thinker who reasons from first principles over pattern matching.
- Interested in learning about biochemistry and the drug development process.
What we offer
- The opportunity to work on challenging, high impact ML research that is immediately deployed to accelerate the discovery of new medicines.
- One-on-one mentorship to help guide your research and act as a point person for questions.
- Strong technical coworkers in AI, software, and chemistry, who all have a powerful mix of intellectual curiosity and humility. The team reads and discusses 1-2 ML or chemistry papers every week to stay on top of the field and inspire new ideas.
Genesis Therapeutics is unifying AI and biotech to discover novel and breakthrough treatments for patients with severe and devastating conditions. Genesis was founded on groundbreaking molecular ML research and since has established itself as the industry leader in AI for small molecule drug discovery. Our team of accomplished biotech leaders and expert drug hunters joins forces with deep learning researchers and software engineers who are pioneering predictive and generative AI technologies for molecules.
Our team has created the industry's most advanced molecular AI platform called GEMS (Genesis Exploration of Molecular Space), to accelerate and optimize small molecule drug discovery and to enable the discovery of novel first-in-class and best-in-class small molecule drugs for challenging and/or undruggable targets.
The company has leveraged GEMS to build an internal pipeline with multiple programs against high-value targets, including data-poor and canonically undruggable targets where GEMS is uniquely advantaged. In addition, Genesis has signed AI-focused platform collaborations with major pharmaceutical companies, including most recently Incyte Corporation (Feb 2025) and Gilead Sciences (Sept 2024).
We raised a $200M series B in August 2023, and have raised over $300M in funding from top technology and biotech investors, including Andreessen Horowitz, Rock Springs Capital, T. Rowe Price, Fidelity, Radical Ventures, NVentures (NVIDIA's VC arm), BlackRock, and Menlo Ventures.
Genesis is headquartered in Burlingame, CA, with a fully integrated laboratory in San Diego. We are proud to be an inclusive workplace and an Equal Opportunity Employer.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene
Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.
Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech
- Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
- Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
- Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
- Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
- Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
- Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
