The ML/AI Safety Engineer will ensure ML/AI technologies meet safety standards in AD/ADAS software, manage safety requirements, and collaborate across teams.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
An ML/AI safety engineer who can shepherd ML/AI technology inside the AD/ADAS software to mass production. This is an individual contributor role with wide cross-functional visibility. You translate ML/AI-related hazards into concrete safety requirements, architectures, and evidence considering both data and architecture aspects of our ML models. You guide teams through each step of ML/AI technology functional safety development as per ISO 8800 and ISO 21448 assuring collaborative environment and acting as a sleeves-rolled-up partner.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead ISO 8800 deployment within AD/ADAS, making sure it is aligned with industry standards and regulations on functional safety.
- Specify, develop, and review ML-related safety requirements across ML/AI technology including ML models, datasets, ML workflows and infrastructure.
- Design documentation, test plans, and ensure bidirectional traceability between work products at different development stages for the ML/AI technology.
- Own the safety management for the ML models, compile safety manuals, curate evidence, perform periodic gap analyses, manage improvement plans, and present results periodically to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Mentor developers on safety culture, specifically with regards to the ML/AI technology domain.
- Facilitate safety design reviews and tool-qualification strategies.
- Collaborate with Quality, Cybersecurity and Functional Safety Subject Matter Experts to ensure consistent, cohesive, audit-ready releases.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s or Master’s in CS, EE, ME or related discipline.
- 5+ years in safety-critical automotive applications or production development.
- 2+ years of ML/AI safety experience.
- Professional level at ISO 26262, and practical ISO 21448 / ISO 8800 deployment.
- Demonstrated ownership of ML-models software development lifecycle (requirements, design, testing).
- Skilled with RMS, TMS tools (JAMA, JIRA, etc.).
- Strong communication and presentation skills across multi-cultural teams and cross-functional domains.
NICE TO HAVES
- Functional Safety Professional or AI Safety Professional certification (TUV/UL or equivalent).
- Experience in in-vehicle functional safety (ISO 26262).
- ASPICE Process Expert / Provisional Assessor or equivalent.
- Japanese language proficiency or experience working with Japanese OEM/Tier-1 partners.
For positions based in Palo Alto, CA, the base pay for this position ranges from $140,000- $230,000 a year.
Your base salary is one part of your total compensation. We offer a base salary, short term and long term incentives, and a comprehensive benefits package. The total compensation offered to an employee will be dependent upon the individual's skills, experience, qualifications, location, and level.
