About Xanadu:

Xanadu’s mission is to build quantum computers that are useful and available to people everywhere.

At Xanadu, we are learners, innovators, researchers, collaborators and problem solvers. We are creating something that has never been built before. What we are doing is extremely hard, the classic moon shot. Few people in their life will be able to be a part of something like this, where if we are successful, the technologies we develop will solve some of the world’s most challenging problems, and literally change the world. And that is something to be excited about!

Your role and responsibilities:

As an industry leader in photonic quantum computing, Xanadu takes hardware very seriously! In this role, you will work within the Fabrication Process Engineering team to deliver Xanadu’s photonic quantum computing hardware. With your deep technical expertise and strong experience in photonics and/or semiconductor metrology, you will be responsible for developing, improving and refining metrology protocols used to develop critical components of Xanadu’s quantum computing hardware.

  • Work with Xanadu engineers to define, develop and implement inline metrology flows for monitoring critical materials and device parameters on a variety of different technology platforms
  • Innovate and improve upon inline metrology protocols to achieve higher resolution measurements of key parameters, enable measurements of hard-to-measure features, etc.
  • Build, monitor and analyze SPC charts to understand variations and specs, categorize outliers, RCA, and provide remedial measures
  • Deliver metrology and data analysis solutions to improve yield, wafer performance, and overall productivity
  • Coordinate with internal software development and data analysis teams to improve data quality and enable quantitative modeling and decision making
  • Design experiments for tool demos and identify new metrology techniques to assist in rapid process development
  • Innovate in the space of metrology and failure analysis
  • Stay abreast of new developments in the fields of metrology and failure analysis, especially related to photonics fabrication process development
Basic qualifications and experience:
  • MS or PhD in materials science, physics, nanoengineering or related field
  • ≥ 3 years of experience developing inline metrology flows for photonics and/or semiconductor chip fabrication
  • Experience working in a foundry environment for integrated photonics and/or semiconductor products, including experience owning lots, working with an MES, etc.
  • Strong familiarity or mastery of several standard semiconductor and photonics metrology and failure analysis techniques, including some subset of: XPS, Overlay, OCD, SEM, TEM, AFM, defect inspection, ellipsometry, XRR/XRD, SIMS, Raman spectroscopy, etc.
  • Experience with statistical analysis techniques and associated programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB, etc.)
  • Demonstrated track record of method development, innovation and making improvements in the field of integrated photonics and/or semiconductor metrology
  • Experience coordinating with and managing external partners, including major semiconductor and photonics foundries, external metrology labs, and/or metrology tool vendors
  • Experience purchasing metrology tools, including performing best-of-breed evaluations, defining tool acceptance criteria, etc.
  • Strong critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrated ability to tackle challenging problems and develop innovative solutions
  • Excellent communication skills and strong sense of teamwork
  • Ability to travel for work up to ~25% time
Preferred qualifications and experience:
  • ≥ 6 years of experience developing inline metrology flows for photonics and/or semiconductor chip fabrication
  • Experience characterizing multiple material systems, such as silicon-based materials, dielectrics, crystalline electro-optic materials, III-Vs, etc.
  • Experience with metrology development for ultra-low loss photonic components
  • Prior experience owning metrology and characterization tools
  • Experience working in fabless companies
  • Experience with Material management systems

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
