Mechanical Engineering Supervisor – Lifecycle Performance Services
Job Summary
The Mechanical Engineering Supervisor leads a team of engineers responsible for delivering high-quality mechanical design and execution for system upgrades, retrofits, and integration projects. This role balances technical contribution with leadership, ensuring projects are executed successfully while fostering the growth, engagement, and development of team members.
Supervisors are accountable for aligning resources with demand, maintaining quality standards, and supporting cross-functional collaboration across project management, electrical and controls, purchasing, estimating, and installation teams. Success in this role is measured not only by project outcomes, but by the effectiveness and growth of the team itself.
Essential Functions:
- Supervise, coach, and mentor a team of mechanical engineers and designers, fostering professional growth and engagement.
- Create and manage resource plans to ensure projects are properly staffed and supported.
- Oversee the successful execution of projects in alignment with scope, schedule, budget, and quality standards.
- Serve as Project Engineer (mechanical lead) on assigned projects, providing technical oversight and ensuring deliverables meet requirements.
- Conduct design reviews, drawing checks, and technical evaluations to maintain quality and consistency.
- Prioritize team member development through structured training, coaching, mentoring, and career planning.
- Maintain and apply knowledge of customer, industry, and FORTNA design standards, specifications, and tools.
- Ensure team members receive required safety training (OSHA 10, Lock-Out/Tag-Out) and reinforce safe work practices.
- Improve and implement departmental processes; develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Support capacity planning through short-term assignments and long-term forecasting.
- Recommend hiring or subcontractor needs and oversee subcontractor onboarding, integration, and performance.
- Review and approve timesheets, PTO requests, and expense reports; ensure compliance with company policies.
- Provide input for departmental reporting, budget planning, and KPI tracking.
- Collaborate with project management, estimating, purchasing, electrical, controls, and installation teams to align resources and resolve issues.
- Participate in Pre-PO reviews and program status meetings as delegated by the Department Manager.
- Oversee lessons learned reviews and support continuous improvement initiatives across the department.
- Contribute to company-wide initiatives, providing input, testing, and implementation support when required.
- Model and reinforce FORTNA’s cultural values: teamwork, customer focus, and operational excellence.
Qualifications / Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, or equivalent industry experience (5+ years).
- Proven experience leading engineering teams in a department or project setting.
- Strong technical foundation in mechanical design and system integration.
- Proficiency with Autodesk tools (AutoCAD, Inventor, Vault, Navisworks, Recap, BIM) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and develop engineers at different stages of their careers.
- Skilled in capacity planning, resource management, and project forecasting.
- Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking abilities; able to balance details with big-picture priorities.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across functions and levels of the organization.
- Knowledge of customer and industry design standards and specifications.
- Willingness to travel up to ~30% as required to support projects.
- Passion for building a positive team culture that emphasizes safety, integrity, accountability, and continuous improvement.
