The intern will design, test, and implement hardware components for a humanoid robot, requiring collaboration, CAD skills, and prototype testing.
Figure is an AI Robotics company developing a general purpose humanoid. Our humanoid is designed for corporate tasks targeting labor shortages and jobs that are undesirable or unsafe. We are based in San Jose, CA and require 5 days/week in-office collaboration.
We are looking for a Mechanical Engineering intern for Fall 2025 and onwards to design, test, and implement key hardware components for our humanoid robot. This internship is intended for students graduating in Summer 2026 or within the following year.
Responsibilities:
- Design parts in 3D CAD that satisfy load conditions, industrial design form factors, and durability requirements
- Build and test prototypes to validate mechanical concepts and performance
- Generate accurate 2D drawings using GD&T per ASME Y14.5 to ensure tight tolerances and proper fits
- Design and build test stands; support mechanical engineering and systems integration teams with hands-on testing
- Inspect first articles, track part quality, and continuously support parts on robot development platforms
- Support electromechanical integration, including components such as sensors and motors
Requirements:
- Must submit a portfolio or website of relevant projects and your role
- Pursuing a degree in Mechanical, Robotics, Mechatronics, or a related engineering field, having completed at least two years by the start of the internship
- Experience using 3D CAD software to design parts with complex geometry
- Experience designing, building, and testing mechanical prototypes
- Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on experience with hardware projects
- Ability to write and maintain clean documentation throughout the design process
- Passion for robotics and hardware development
Bonus Qualifications:
- CATIA V6 experience
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes and first article inspection
- Experience with sensors, motors, or electromechanical systems
- Exposure to FEA, simulation tools, or basic programming (e.g., Python, MATLAB)

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene
Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.
Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech
- Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
- Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
- Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
- Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
