Your Opportunity
As a Mechanical Engineer specializing in Vehicle Fueling Infrastructure, you will work on tasks and support projects as a team member under the guidance of a Senior Engineer or practice-area Principal, as well as collaborating with other engineers within Stantec. You will participate in the evaluation, recommendation, design, and specification of Vehicle Fueling Systems of all types – with an emphasis on hydrogen and compressed natural gas (CNG), as well as for petroleum and HD-EV charging. At a high level, the project scope is to determine and adhere to the client’s project parameters, verifying compliance with applicable codes and meeting engineering standards and best practices. Learning and training opportunities for new fueling technologies will be provided.
The ideal candidate will have a California mechanical P.E. license, have experience in designing vehicle-fueling infrastructure for hydrogen, CNG and petroleum, experience in consulting engineering, and be comfortable with collaborative design. Participating in a multi-discipline design process, participate occasionally in business-development pursuits, and interfacing with other design disciplines inside and outside of Stantec. Candidates with a mechanical engineering degree that have the requisite experience and that have achieved EIT status or are on track for achieving EIT status will also be considered.
As your experience grows in this position, you will be encouraged to lead small and medium-sized projects within the team.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Provide work under the direction of the practice-area Principal or Senior Engineer as outlined below. Also collaborate with and support other disciplines and operating units within Stantec as required.
- Hold a Mechanical PE license in California, as well as registration with NCEES. Includes PE stamping of final drawings and documents when appropriate.
- Some familiarity with design of gas-compressor systems, including high-speed, high-pressure (4000 PSI+) systems, and associated high-pressure piping and tubing designs, preferably compressed natural gas (CNG), as well as hydrogen.
- Interface with and direct a Mechanical Designer/Drafter to prepare BIM- and CAD-based construction drawings for fueling facilities and infrastructure. Includes preparing design concepts and markups using Bluebeam for process-piping systems in PDF format and direct Designer in preparation of plans, details, and process-flow schematics.
- Preferred experience with participating and offering technical inputs to HAZOP studies in hydrogen refueling.
- Basic knowledge of Master Format/CSI specification structure for equipment and product specifications.
- Strong technical- and report-writing skills, including good grammar and native-equivalent proficiency in English.
- Preferred experience with basic electrical power design, including preparing preliminary electrical-load schedules and conceptual single-line diagrams for 480V 800-2500A compressor-drive schemes.
- Preferred ability to occasionally prepare or modify drawings in Revit, though Designer is primarily responsible for preparing drawings.
- Participate in design-QC phases to verify drawings and specifications meet project requirements and are free of errors.
- Research equipment and materials needed to fulfil client and project requirements.
- Work with architectural, electrical, structural, civil, and other design disciplines in the coordination of facility designs.
- Represent the fuel-design team at inter-discipline-design meetings, including virtual and in-person meetings.
- Review submittals against specifications and design drawings.
- Research and conduct interpretations of drawings, codes, and regulations.
- Lead or participate in field inspections of in-process or completed project work and prepare observation reports and punch lists. Includes travel outside of Southern California three to five times per year for up to two nights each trip.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the practice-area Principal and other senior engineering and architectural staff.
- Basic knowledge of designing gasoline and diesel fueling systems, including underground and aboveground tank configurations, dispensers and leak-monitoring systems is a plus but not required.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Thorough understanding of mechanical engineering concepts and ability to effectively communicate ideas to others in both oral and written mediums.
- Experience with or understanding fluid-process systems.
- Familiarity with PLC-based controllers, control of actuated valves, etc.
- Understanding of engineering mathematics and fluid dynamics.
- Basic understanding of Revit and its use as a drafting/design tool; proficiency is a plus, including experience in collaborative environments using BIM360/ACC.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD.
- Basic understanding of electrical-power systems, including electrical single-line diagrams.
- Possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
- State of California Mechanical-PE license.
- Minimum 7 years’ experience working as a mechanical engineer on the design of fluid-process systems identified like those described herein is required.
- Experience in the oil and gas industry or in fueling-systems design is an advantage.
- Ability to commute to our downtown Los Angeles office.
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
