In this position, you will participate in BAE Systems' nationwide LEAP Internship & Co-op Program, where you will Learn, Engage, Apply, and Progress within the company. The LEAP Program will provide you with the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals on impactful projects, engage in career development opportunities, and network with our business leaders and the other students in the program. BAE Systems is seeking motivated and detail-oriented engineering interns to join our 2026 Summer Internship Program. This position provides hands-on experience supporting the overhaul, maintenance, and engineering activities for critical naval weapons systems, including the Mk 45 and Mk 38 naval gun systems, the Mk 110 naval gun system, and the Mk 41 Vertical Launching System (VLS).
In this position, you will be supporting the Combat Mission Systems (CMS) Business at our Chula Vista, CA facility. Relocation will NOT be offered and housing is not provided.
As a LEAP Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering Intern, you will:
  • Inspection: Assist in the direct inspection of complex mechanical and electronic subsystems to identify defects, wear, and potential areas for improvement.
  • Repair: Participate in the repair of mechanical and electronic subsystems, working closely with senior engineers to troubleshoot issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Testing: Support testing activities for mechanical and electronic subsystems, helping to validate performance, identify issues, and optimize system functionality.
  • Modernization: Contribute to the modernization of complex mechanical and electronic subsystems, collaborating with senior engineers to design, develop, and implement upgrades and improvements.
These hands-on experiences will provide you with valuable insights into the design, development, and maintenance of complex systems, preparing you for a successful career as a mechanical engineer or aerospace engineer
Required Education, Experience, & Skills
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Strong technical aptitude and interest in complex mechanical and electronic systems.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
  • Prior experience with mechanical disassembly/assembly, system maintenance, or engineering labs.
  • Problem-solving mindset and willingness to learn new technical skills.
  • Leadership qualities demonstrated through academic, athletic, or extracurricular achievements.

Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $44660 - $62088
Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
Temporary employees generally are not eligible for BAE Systems benefits, but can elect to participate in the 401(k) savings plan. Temporary employees working 20+ hours per week are eligible for medical benefits, the employee assistance program, and business travel accident insurance.
