Job Title: Managing Editor (for News)

Location: Los Angeles, CA (Hybrid)

Salary range: $90,000 - $125,000

About the Role:

We're looking for a Managing Editor to help us create a fresh, modern and transparent music business news publication.

As Managing Editor you'll be managing The ROSTR Group's news brand New Industry Friday (aka NIF) in addition to wider news related activity across the group. We have a vision but that vision is in the very early stages of development so you'll be integral in shaping and finding a way to execute that vision.

In addition to strategy you'll be hands-on day-to-day, especially in the early stages. You'll be identifying, writing, and editing news articles, newsletters and other reports. You'll also be working with different teams to tap into and help distribute The ROSTR Group's unique data including the notorious Who Booked Coachella?, Behind The GRAMMYs, 🔥 Hottest Signings and other content series.

This role is perfect for someone who has worked in music business news for a number of years and loves the space but who is sick of…

  • writing sponsored content that masquerades as news

  • regurgitating press releases

  • covering the same small group of people and companies year after year

  • having their hard work and writing blocked by 10 different shitty pop-up ads (and paywalls)

  • working in slow moving orgs with bad technology and old ideas

Key Responsibilities
  • Shape and execute the editorial vision for New Industry Friday (NIF) and other news across The ROSTR Group.

  • Develop and implement content strategies across articles, newsletters, and other media formats.

  • Identify and write impactful, original stories that challenge industry norms.

  • Edit and refine content to maintain a high standard of quality and clarity.

  • Leverage The ROSTR Group's proprietary data and partner network for unique insights.

  • Hire, commission, and manage freelance writers and contributors as the publication scales.

  • Ensure editorial integrity by rejecting fluff, nepotism, and ad-heavy compromises.

  • Collaborate with internal teams to experiment with new content formats and distribution strategies.

Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience in music business journalism, editorial management, or related fields.

  • Strong writing and editing skills with a sharp eye for detail.

  • Deep understanding of the music industry and its evolving business landscape.

  • Experience managing writers, freelancers, or editorial teams.

  • Ability to work independently while driving forward strategic goals.

  • Comfortable using data and industry insights to craft compelling stories.

  • Passion for redefining music business journalism and making it more transparent and engaging.

  • Adaptability to a fast-paced, evolving startup environment.

Benefits:

  • This is a full-time role.

  • 4.5 days per week

  • Employment will be "at-will."

  • Eligible for ROSTR’s health, vision, and dental plan.

  • Enrollment in ROSTR’s 401(k).

  • 21 days paid time off.

  • 6 paid holidays, plus a week off from Christmas to New Year’s Eve.

About The ROSTR Group:

The ROSTR Group is a media and technology company helping make the music industry more transparent and connected. We build innovative products that provide music industry professionals with the tools and insights they need to thrive.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
