Why PlayStation?

PlayStation isn’t just the Best Place to Play — it’s also the Best Place to Work. Today, we’re recognized as a global leader in entertainment producing The PlayStation family of products and services including PlayStation®5, PlayStation®4, PlayStation®VR, PlayStation®Plus, acclaimed PlayStation software titles from PlayStation Studios, and more.

PlayStation also strives to create an inclusive environment that empowers employees and embraces diversity. We welcome and encourage everyone who has a passion and curiosity for innovation, technology, and play to explore our open positions and join our growing global team.

The PlayStation brand falls under Sony Interactive Entertainment, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation.

How would you like to influence the most successful gaming platform of all time, by leading our teams which test and analyze the very technology our PlayStation developers use to build our best selling games?

Sony Interactive Entertainment (PlayStation) has an exciting career opportunity! We are looking for a creative, diligent, hands-on Software Engineering Manager in Test who will be responsible for leading quality engineering (QE) teams. These teams will research and build the next generation of PlayStation's testing technology, and, as their leader, you will set this future technology's direction.

Join us, and coordinate with our internal software development teams who are building the core tech behind the console games of tomorrow. This involves analyzing the quality of at least two of the following: (1) PlayStation CPU compilers and tools that are part of the open-source LLVM compiler infrastructure. (2) Real-world audio and video codecs used throughout the PlayStation system software. (3) PlayStation’s 3D Audio technology and greater audio ecosystem used in the PlayStation software development kit (SDK) and system software. While these three areas are primary focus areas, there may be opportunities in testing 3D graphics, artificial intelligence, and the fully integrated PlayStation game development environment.

With your direction, PlayStation can successfully innovate while maintaining the highest quality software standards. If this sounds exciting, please apply!

Responsibilities:
  • Lead a diverse team of our Software Engineers in Test. Own everything from hiring to mentoring, work planning, career growth and performance management.
  • Support these QE teams in their efforts to maintain and improve tools and infrastructure to build and test PlayStation sample applications.
  • Research and craft new tools for overcoming inefficient processes by automating work.
  • Coordinate construction of testing plans, samples, and documentation together with our global software production, documentation, and remote offshore engineering teams.
Technical Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • Proficient in Python programming. (Multiple industry projects completed.)
  • Enough C++ experience to provide guidance to junior engineers in code review.
  • A solid understanding of the software development lifecycle, and applying proven software methodologies to testing and driving reductions in technical debt.
  • Experience with software engineering practices, and exposure to software automation and testing systems (for example, Jenkins).
  • The following are very nice to have (but not required): Past experience with cloud computing and containerization (Docker), or game development.
Skills and Characteristics
  • Effective leading medium size Agile teams in quality and testing engineering domains. (Software engineering managers with deep experience and understanding of testing groups and processes should also apply.)
  • Proven success in people management including mentorship.
  • Possessing outstanding verbal and written communication skills, which encompass presenting to product managers, software engineers, project managers, and customers.
  • Experience recruiting software engineering talent.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
