At Samsara, we are helping improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of the physical operations that power our global economy. Working at Samsara means you’ll help define the future of physical operations and be on a team that’s shaping an exciting array of product solutions, including Video-Based Safety, Vehicle Telematics, Apps and Driver Workflows, Equipment Monitoring, and Site Visibility. As part of a recently public company, you’ll have the autonomy and support to make an impact as we build for the long term.

About Samsara:

Samsara is the pioneer of the Connected Operations Cloud, which allows businesses that depend on physical operations to harness IoT (Internet of Things) data to develop actionable business insights and improve their operations. We are a rapidly growing company with a mission to increase the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of the operations that power the global economy.

We are seeking an Engineering Manager for our Commercial Navigation team. This is a unique opportunity to lead a critical and evolving area within Samsara, building the future of routing and in-cab experiences for commercial vehicles. The team is performing well and we are looking for a leader who can maintain this momentum while strategically scaling our mobile capabilities.

About the Team:

The Commercial Navigation team builds the mobile experiences that guide drivers through their day - whether they’re delivering freight, servicing equipment, or arriving at a job site. We are responsible for commercial routing on Samsara’s Driver App, supporting the full journey from turn-by-turn navigation to site-specific workflows. Our product must account for complex constraints like vehicle size and weight, road regulations, driver safety, and service-level expectations. We are also uniquely positioned to differentiate with Samsara’s platform - tapping into trillions of real-world datapoints from traffic and weather to customer-defined risk zones - to create faster, safer, and smarter routes for every kind of fleet.

This is a remote position open to candidates residing in the US.

You should apply if:

  • You want to impact the industries that run our world: The software, firmware, and hardware you build will result in real-world impact—helping to keep the lights on, get food into grocery stores, and most importantly, ensure workers return home safely.
  • You want to build for scale: With over 2.3 million IoT devices deployed to our global customers, you will work on a range of new and mature technologies driving scalable innovation for customers across industries driving the world's physical operations.
  • You are a life-long learner: We have ambitious goals. Every Samsarian has a growth mindset as we work with a wide range of technologies, challenges, and customers that push us to learn on the go.
  • You believe customers are more than a number: Samsara engineers enjoy a rare closeness to the end user and you will have the opportunity to participate in customer interviews, collaborate with customer success and product managers, and use metrics to ensure our work is translating into better customer outcomes.
  • You are a team player: Working on our Samsara Engineering teams requires a mix of independent effort and collaboration. Motivated by our mission, we’re all racing toward our connected operations vision, and we intend to win—together.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead development of mobile applications for commercial vehicle navigation using iOS and React Native.
  • Define the long-term roadmap for navigation in partnership with product and design.
  • Work with other teams to integrate routing data to provide optimal navigation for drivers.
  • Mentor engineers and guide mobile development practices and architecture.
  • Champion, role model, and embed Samsara’s cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices
  • Hire, develop and lead an inclusive, engaged, and high performing team.

Minimum requirements for the role:

  • 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with 5+ years leading mobile teams.
  • Experience building production-grade 0-1 mobile apps
  • Strong understanding of mobile architecture, performance, and platform APIs.
  • Proficient in React Native and iOS development (Swift or Objective-C).
  • Experience with mapping SDKs and geolocation APIs.
  • Familiar with mobile CI/CD, build tools and test automation

An ideal candidate also has:

  • Experience building mobile apps for drivers or field workers.
  • Ability to align engineering with product and operations teams.
  • Understanding of navigation, logistics, or routing systems.
  • Degree in Computer Science or related field.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
