The Manager, SUT/Business Registration will lead the company’s sales tax and business registration compliance processes, which includes annual report filing and business licensing. This role will manage sales tax and business license audits, ensure the proper application of tax codes throughout systems, and own the sales tax returns and Avalara vendor relationship. The Manager, SUT/Business Registration will be heavily involved with cross department coordination. This includes working with teams such as legal, accounting, product teams, and external partners to ensure timely resolution of sales tax issues, compliance with business regulations, and effective management of tax reporting and filings. This person will have proficiency in sales and use tax, general accounting knowledge, and a credible understanding of business compliance implications of acquisitions. 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Ensures that invoicing systems are accurately configured for compliance with tax laws and regulations.
  • Coordinate the build, configuration, and testing of custom sales tax rules in tax automation software (e.g., Avalara integrations), ensuring accurate tax treatment for all transactions.
  • Coordinate and manage sales tax refunds, ensuring proper documentation, accurate reporting, and timely filing of tax returns.
  • Oversee the validation, audit, and reconciliation of transactions to ensure they align with tax returns, financial statements, and accounting records.
  • Manage customer tax exemptions, ensuring tax exemption certificates are valid and comply with applicable sales tax laws and regulations.
  • Supervise Acquisition Holdback coordination with accounting teams to ensure proper handling of Net Working Capital (NWC) and tax implications related to acquisitions. 
  • Ensure proper tax code assignments for new products and enhancements, working closely with product development, sales and systems teams.
  • Maintain relationships with Avalara Account Management to monitor transaction thresholds, nexus changes, and managed return volume.
  • Oversee the management of indirect taxes in Canada (HST/GST), ensuring compliance with provincial sales tax regulations and addressing any related issues.
  • Monitor the inbound tax email queue and disposition as needed.  Report on task completion and compliance metrics.
  • Business Licenses, Filing, and Registration Compliance – coordination with new business teams when new deals are closed/won, thirdparty coordination as needed to ensure compliance with state and local jurisdictions.  
  • Maintain database of existing business registrations/licenses/filing and documentation.
  • Ensure processes are followed and report on KPIs.
  • Manage the business registration and business license filings for existing Mitratech entities, ensuring timely filings of annual renewals, reinstatements and other related filings.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure smooth operations 
  • Oversee the integration of new acquisition into the process by taking lead in the completion of change of agent filings, conducting statewide audit reviews and ensuring filings are completed in all relevant jurisdictions with business activity.
  • Collaborate with internal (legal, tax, accounting) and external stakeholders (registered agent, CT Corp) to streamline the process and gather relevant information to perform daily tasks.
  • Maintain the relationship with CT Corp and stay up-to-date with relevant laws and regulations 
  • Monitor the business registration and compliance mailbox and resolve any business compliance-related issues or concerns.
  • Evaluate and implement new and improved registration policies and procedures. 

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field. 
  • 5-7 years of experience in sales and use tax compliance or indirect tax management and business registration compliance.
  • Experience with Avalara or similar tax software is required.
  • Previous managerial experience, with a demonstrated ability to manage tax compliance or complex projects.
  • Proven experience in handling sales tax filings, preparing responses, and working with tax authorities and external business partners/advisors.
  • Experience managing indirect taxes across multiple jurisdictions, including the U.S. and Canada, is highly preferred.
  • A CPA or other relevant tax certification (e.g., CMI) is a plus.
  • Highly proficient in spoken and written English and availability during Central Timezone.
  • Avalara, Salesforce Billing, and Netsuite experience preferred.

We will disclose intended pay ranges in our job ads for US-based opportunities– This role can be performed 100% remote anywhere in the US. Anticipated Pay Range: $105,000 – $115,000 Annually USD
