About OpenSesame

OpenSesame's mission is to help develop the world's most productive and admired workforces. We do this by delivering a comprehensive catalog of elearning courses from the world's top publishers. We add value to customers through their entire learning journey.

While it appears to most people that we just sell training courses (over 20,000 of them), what we really offer is the opportunity for companies to upgrade the skills of each of their employees.

We are at a pivotal time in our growth as we diversify the ways we drive revenue. We've expanded our product offering dramatically, and have a growing network of partners that is developing into a vibrant channel. Our customer base has high satisfaction ratings and there is room to grow our retention even more.

About the Job

We are seeking a strong, organized IS leader who wants to take an existing helpdesk and sysadmin organization to the next level.  The ideal candidate will have strong coaching capabilities to help mentor and grow their team.  The coaching will be paired with the creation, nourishment, and evolution of processes for these teams under the mentorship of your director.

Performance Objectives:

In your first 90 days, you will be getting the lay of the land with both your teams and OpenSesame.

People:

  • Form a rapport with team members and get to know them.
  • Understand your team’s process and how people work together.
  • Join your team for some of their regular tasks to get hands-on experience.
  • Get an understanding of where each team member is in their career and where they want to go.
  • Get to know your peers in compliance and engineering across the company.

Product:

  • Understand how to use your team’s core tools.
  • Develop a reasonable understanding of the company tool ecosystem and ensure documentation is up to date.
  • Ride along with a vendor evaluation and/or renewal
  • Coach team members in collectively owning their work.
  • Coach team members individually.

Process:

  • Review the IS team productivity and quality metrics and OKRs.
  • Understand the process for helpdesk tickets and projects.
  • Lead the team in chartering exercises to guide and form their practices, procedures and ceremonies.
  • Guide the team to making even better documentation and process repeatability.
  • Take the reins for the process overall and evolve it further.

Within 6 months, your teams will be working well together and starting to evolve the process themselves with your guidance. You will be taking more ownership of the IS project roadmap and start to take ownership of some vendor relationships.

People:

  • Teach senior members of the team to act as player-coaches themselves.
  • Collaborate with compliance and engineering to have a shared security stance vision.
  • Communicate about complex migrations with groups, potentially the entire company, at a high level of quality.

Product:

  • Take ownership of the Vendor on-boarding and off-boarding process.
  • Own 2-3 Vendor relationships.
  • Begin to quantify vendor evaluation needs based on data.
  • Collaborate and advocate for your vision for the project roadmap and priorities.

Process:

  • Own the company's application authentication stance.
  • Prioritize automation over hands-on action in more critical systems.
  • Create disaster recovery processes for critical systems.
  • Have your next several process improvement experiments ready to go.

By the end of your first year, you will have established yourself as a relied-upon partner to most teams in OpenSesame and are working, often behind the scenes, for your team to keep them productively supporting all of the company's initiatives.

  • Always know how your team members are doing.
  • Able to advocate for anything with data.
  • Building processes rather than projects.
  • Guiding and growing your team members.
  • Looking for needs to be filled.
  • Learning always, improving constantly.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
