We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what’s next.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Netflix seeks an intellectually curious and experienced attorney to join as a Manager/Counsel on the Documentary Film team -- the team behind popular and award-winning content like My Octopus Teacher, Tinder Swindler, Icarus, American Factory, Becoming, David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet, and Homecoming: A Film by Beyonce.  The successful candidate will be an integral part of the original documentary film team and will oversee all facets of in-house and third-party productions.

REQUIREMENTS

The successful candidate should have at least five (5) years of business and legal affairs experience in the development, production and licensing of unscripted television and/or documentary film, with direct experience negotiating and drafting deal terms and all forms of agreements, including production services agreements, above-the-line agreements, license agreements and production forms. They should be extremely comfortable dealing directly with productions, producers and talent representatives, as well as communicating across myriad departments within the company.

They need to be ready, willing, and able to work independently and completely own all business and legal facets of making a documentary film including: negotiating the commercial terms for projects, negotiating and drafting the related legal agreements, and overseeing production-legal and clearance issues for all of their projects. Experience providing in-house support and managing outside counsel OR experience serving, as outside production counsel, for a network, streaming service, or a production company that specializes in unscripted and/or documentary programming is required. Expertise in the development and production of sports documentaries is preferred. The successful candidate should have knowledge of substantive areas of the law relevant to documentary filmmaking, such as defamation, copyright, and privacy rights and should also be familiar with journalistic standards and practices.

A successful candidate will also possess the following:

  • J.D. (or international equivalent) and membership in good standing in at least one state bar is required.

  • Excellent leadership, supervisory, interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Strong analytical capabilities and judgment.

  • Ability to work proactively, independently, and reliably under tight timeframes in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively, think practically and be solution-oriented.

  • Willingness to tackle matters outside of expertise.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
