ROLE SUMMARY
The Contract Development Manager is a significant, cross-functional role within the U.S. Market Access/Institutional Contracting team that works collaboratively in support of various U.S. Pfizer businesses and stakeholders (including Contract Strategy and Management, Legal, Account Management, Portfolio Teams, Trade, Sales, Government Pricing, etc.) by executing against contract strategies for the customer base which includes but is not limited to the following: Institutions, Group Purchasing Organizations (GPOs), Integrated Delivery Networks (IDNs), Alternate Sites, and Trade. The Contract Development Manager is an integral individual contributor who focuses on developing critical contractual agreement terms and conditions to support Pfizer Business Unit Sales and Market strategies.
The successful candidate will be self-driven with strong business acumen and can-do attitude; demonstrate the ability to interface, communicate effectively, and build relationships with all levels within the organization; and be highly proficient in drafting and negotiating more complex Institutional, GPO and IDN customer agreements, in alignment with customer, company and business strategies, legal obligations, as well as ensuring cross-functional input and collaboration. He/she will be organized, attentive to details and knowledgeable about the pharmaceutical industry, working within the laws and regulations of the pharmaceutical industry and Pfizer Policies. He/she will have proven expertise working in a complex environment and navigating a matrixed organization to implement best practices in all contract development activities.
The Contract Development Manager will lead contract development projects/negotiations with low to medium risk levels; and, actively participate and support contracting projects/negotiations with medium to high risk levels. This position will have a direct impact on establishing and maintaining account management and customer relationships via defined and sometimes creative negotiations, contracting activities and operational practices. This person must have an in-depth knowledge of customary terms and conditions in business agreements and function as a content expert on business and legal-related terms for GPO and IDN agreements.
This position is leveled as a grade 10.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
Contract Development
  • Facilitate contractual proposals and agreements in support of Pfizer Business and Strategy initiatives with a high level of independence in leading low to medium level complexity contract development and negotiations
  • Develop agreements that maximize contract utilization while ensuring compliance with all laws and regulations, pricing guidelines and other legal considerations
  • Evaluate negotiation position and recommend appropriate actions/changes based upon customer input and evolving market conditions
  • Solicit and assimilate input into contract negotiations on terms and conditions, including the escalation of specific points of contention on contractual issues to leadership, Strategy and Contract Management, Account Management, internal legal counsel and other internal business teams; Recommend appropriate courses of action
  • Manage amendments and other contractual communications to the customer
  • Possess knowledge of business, financial, legal and commercial contract process and requirements; manage the development of contract documents that are presented and negotiated with customers
  • Convert key learnings from ongoing contract development activities into go-forward adjustments to contract clauses and templates

Analyses
  • Conduct analysis of customer's terms and conditions documents and redline responses to aid in the development of contract counterproposals and agreements for assigned contracts
  • Provide guidance and direction to Account Management team on contract terms and conditions
  • Evaluate the use of certain contract clauses and incorporating them into standard clauses/templates for consistency and risk management

Strategic Thinking
  • Leverage knowledge of customers, existing contracts and Pfizer strategies to understand the impact of evolving contract strategies; Provide expertise and recommendations to Contract Strategy & Management and Business Unit leads, as well as other internal colleagues of the impact/risks of terms and conditions on contracting strategies, while maintaining the integrity of the existing SOX compliant CSM controls, good documentation practices and contract governance.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of institutional customers; cursory knowledge of legal, business and financial terms and conditions across the pharmaceutical product customer (Providers) and distribution channels. Able to access the impact of risks to Pfizer, business unit and/or other contracts in the development and use of terms and conditions.
  • General knowledge of how changes in healthcare laws and regulations impact critical customer engagements
  • Ability to discuss and resolve divergent interests and needs between Customers and Pfizer, or internal interests between various stakeholders

Project Management
  • Demonstrate initiative and ownership in independently leading and completing assigned projects
  • Projects may include:
    • Continuous Improvements - Identify opportunities for process improvements; Participate in the effort to design and implement contract template changes; Partner with Account Management and other areas to include internal contracting team on unique contracting situations, strategies and market opportunities

Relationships
  • Build and foster relationships with many cross-functional teams such as Contract Strategy, Contract Management, Legal, Trade, Sales, Account Management, Portfolio Teams, Business Technology, Government Pricing, Corporate Finance and the Pfizer Business Units, in order to successfully manage the contract development lifecycle
  • Develop and manage key contract relationships and align on common business objectives; be comfortable navigating through conflict while maintaining positive, productive relationships with internal stakeholders and external customers
  • Partner with internal stakeholders and external customers to identify, recommend and implement process improvements
  • Provide guidance and peer review to Contract Development colleagues

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Candidate demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including: the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, oversee and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact.
  • Applicants must have a bachelor's degree with 4+ years of experience OR a master's degree with 2+ years of experience OR PhD OR an associate degree with 8+ years of experience OR a High School diploma (or equivalent) with 10+ years of relevant experience .
  • Relevant experience in the pharmaceutical industry and/or contracting functions
  • Understanding of the contracting process including terms and conditions, the redline process, customer negotiations, administration of contracts, and the full contract life cycle
  • Self-starter with an ability to work independently or collaboratively as part of a team; builds strong cross-functional relationships across the organization and with customers
  • Comfortable working under deadlines, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple critical and complex projects with a wide-ranging group of constituents; proven track record of being able to prioritize and achieve successful outcomes
  • Strong analytical and negotiation skills; demonstrated strategic thinking and creativity; ability to bring strategies and analysis to a tactical / executable level
  • Passionate, energetic, detail oriented, organized, driven, and accountable

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $96 300,00 to $160 500,00.* In addition, this position is eligible for participation in Pfizer's Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 12,5% of the base salary and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program. * The annual base salary for this position in Tampa, FL ranges from $86 800,00 to $144 600,00.
