About your skills

  • People & Change Leadership – You have a track record building, managing, and leading high-trust, high-performance, paid search managers, setting a high hiring bar, coaching for excellence, and staying ahead of evolving best practices related to bidding, new campaign types, new ad formats, and new measurement methodologies.
  • Enterprise Search Ads Program Management – You’ve scaled and rebuilt multi-account programs in excess of $10 million in annual spend while driving efficiency gains and new customer growth.

  • Advanced Statistical Measurement – You are comfortable designing data-driven statistically-powered testing roadmaps, using in-platform A/B & geo-based incrementality tests, documenting learnings in partnership with Analytics teams, and presenting findings to enhance ad platform revenue generation.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration – You have experience partnering with Product, Creative, Analytics or Business Intelligence teams, as well as ad partner relationships to execute change at scale and maintain best-in-class program standards.

About this role

As the Manager, Consumer Paid Search you will serve as the team lead for Udemy’s largest acquisition channel—a $40 Million+ global SEM program operating in 180+ countries and 12+ languages. You’ll be Udemy’s largest paid channel by consumer revenue, and a key part of the company’s transition to subscription-based learning.

As part of your role, you’ll be responsible for the channel’s full year goals and key objectives. You’ll set the strategy, oversee execution, and manage change across ~20+ Google Ads and Microsoft Advertising accounts, and lead a team of 3 paid search specialists, ensuring Udemy remains at the forefront of AI-driven bidding, creative automation, and advanced statistical measurement and testing.

What you’ll be doing

  • Set channel objectives and key results that ladder up to company-wide priorities for increasing Marketplace revenue generation, subscription adoption, and profitability goals.

  • Own global forecasting, pacing, and budget reallocation across regions and countries, ensuring we meet monthly spend and revenue targets.

  • Drive our learning & experimentation agenda (ad copy, audience, pMax, landing pages, subscription offer testing) with a combination of ad-platform A/B tests, geo-holdout incrementality testing, and MMM-led channel and tactical budget optimizations.

  • Advance measurement & data hygiene: own UTM & custom parameter strategy, ensure first-party data collection and conversion integrity, and maintain and refine Tableau & Clarisights dashboards to track performance contribution to key business goals.

  • Lead and coach a team of 3 practitioners, and collaborate with agency partners, providing clear goals, feedback, and career development paths.

  • Partner cross-functionally with cross-functional teams like product, creative, and analytics teams to adapt global program focus around subscription activation, AI reskilling positioning, and profitability improvement.

  • Represent Udemy with platform partners (Google, Microsoft), securing access to betas, and soliciting support and guidance for the deployment of emerging ad formats like AI Max for Search, and AI creative solutions within Google Ads.

What you’ll have

  • Result oriented search expert, constantly looking for new ways to generate more revenue on existing budgets or improved efficiency with decreasing budgets.

  • 7+ years hands-on SEM experience, including 3+ years leading teams or large agency pods.

  • Proven track-record overseeing $10 million+ in annual media deployed and demonstrated ability to improve ROAS & GMV at a global scale.

  • Deep expertise in Google Ads, Microsoft Ads, pMax, Smart Bidding, DSA page feed management, and advanced conversion setups (server-side tracking, modeled conversions, predictive subscription GMV).

  • Familiar with advances in conversational AI tools and AI-powered marketing techniques used to automate processes and enhance operational efficiency.

  • Fluency in advanced analytics & dashboarding workflows (Tableau, Clarisights). Comfort presenting data-driven insights to C-suite stakeholders.

  • Strong coaching abilities, including experience hiring, mentoring, and retaining high-performing SEM talent.

  • [Bonus/Preferred]: Experience with holistic search management and experiences across SEM, SEO, and Generative engine optimization (GEO) search experiences like AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity, and generative AI search.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
