Provide support to UME attorneys specifically in connection with defenses against, and settlements of, U.S. Copyright Act §203 copyright termination claims brought by UMG recording artists.

Job Functions:

Provide support to UME attorneys in connection with UMG recording artists' §203 copyright termination claims, including:

  • Prepare quarterly reports summarizing relevant details regarding all §203 U.S. copyright termination claims, including liaison with UME B.A. attorneys, the UMG litigation department and outside counsel Cowan, Liebowitz & Latman.
  • Collect and summarize all relevant contractual, revenue and royalty information regarding §203 U.S. copyright termination claimants, both U.S. and rest-of-the world.
  • Assist outside counsel in responding to §203 U.S. copyright termination claims, and later assume that responsibility.
  • Research §203 U.S. copyright termination claims asserted against UMG and affiliates.
  • Draft standard form settlement recommendations, agreements and related U.S. Copyright Office filing.
  • Review and summarize §203 settlement agreements and filings.
  • Collect and analyze all §203-relevant information.
  • Maintain and update a definitive §203 Data Base.
  • Liaise with the litigation team, the audit team, the Royalties Department, the Production Department and the Global Digital Department to address day-to-day §203 issues and handle administrative matters.
  • Maintain an organized and up-to-date filing system for §203 claims, settlement and litigation matters.
  • Create physical and electronic files; search and retrieve files on an ongoing basis
  • Draft and send letters and other routine correspondence related to §203 matters.

  • Follows up on delegated assignments through completion
  • Self-starter, who takes initiative and is resourceful; takes ownership of tasks and projects
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize; works well under pressure
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively
  • Excellent typing and computer skills, including in Word, Excel, Outlook

Experience:

  • Extensive experience with U.S. Copyright Act Section 203 business and legal issues

Education:

  • Juris Doctor degree from a U.S. law school
