THE OPPORTUNITY 

Netflix seeks a Legal Associate to join the Business and Legal Affairs team for Nonfiction Series, to handle a wide array of responsibilities related to the acquisition, development, and production of Netflix’s entire Nonfiction slate, including Documentary Series, Unscripted, Sports, Podcasts, and Live Programming (e.g., Love is Blind, the Untold franchise, SAG Awards, WWE, just to name a few). The candidate will primarily oversee production legal and legal affairs in connection with all facets of in-house and third-party productions, and will be an integral part of the Nonfiction Business and Legal Affairs team, also working closely with the entire Nonfiction cross-functional team (e.g., Content, Production, Finance, Marketing).

Responsibilities include:

  • Serve as a point of contact internally and externally for production legal matters arising during development, pre-production, production, post production and launch.

  • Oversee, draft and negotiate all below-the-line and physical production agreements ensuring alignment with Netflix and industry standard and deal contexts (e.g., production services agreements; vendor/rental agreements; likeness and appearance releases; location and material releases, equipment rental agreements; production office space/stage/facilities lease agreements; post production agreements and visual effects agreements).

  • Clearly and succinctly communicate solutions to internal production and business partners as well as external third party legal counsel, producers and production personnel 

  • Efficiently resolve issues without causing delays, adapting to the fast-paced nature of production legal work.

  • Establish and maintain strong internal relationships with cross functional partners including Production Management, Post Production, Product, Business Affairs, Labor, Finance, Health and Safety, Tax, Real Estate, Risk Management teams.

  • Contribute to team policies, practices and workflows.

REQUIREMENTS 

The ideal candidate will have an undergraduate degree (JD or Paralegal certification preferred, but not required) and at least 3 to 5 years of proven experience in a similar business/legal affairs role in the film or television industry. Experience in the unscripted or documentary space a plus. This candidate must also be able to work proactively, independently and reliably on multiple projects under tight timeframes in a fast-paced production environment being able to quickly assess risk and exercise strong judgment in the face of ambiguity.  While the role supports productions primarily filming within UCAN, experience in managing productions outside of UCAN is valued).

  • The ability to organize, clarify and communicate complex ideas quickly, succinctly and accurately. 

  • Confidence in counseling business partners and making decisions that have legal & business impacts.

  • The ability to remain flexible and respond positively to changes.

  • Tech-savvy individual, including proficiency with Google Suite and cloud-based document and database systems.

Generally, our compensation structure consists solely of an annual salary; we do not have bonuses. You choose each year how much of your compensation you want in salary versus stock options. To determine your personal top of market compensation, we rely on market indicators and consider your specific job family, background, skills, and experience to determine your compensation in the market range. The range for this role is $140,000.00 - $230,000.00.
