Middle School Learning Specialist
Brentwood School, a vibrant and diverse K-12 independent school, is looking for a full-time Middle School Learning Specialist starting July 1, 2026. The Middle School Learning Specialist reports to the Middle School Director and qualified candidates should have a Master’s degree or Ph.D. in psychology or educational psychology and a minimum of three years of experience.
The Middle School Learning Specialist is responsible for assessing learning needs, developing individualized strategies, and implementing interventions or programs that promote academic, personal, or professional success. As such, candidates should have deep knowledge of learning differences, current and accepted brain research and methodologies, and evidence-based interventions to support students with learning differences. They should also demonstrate cultural competency in their work with students, families, faculty, and staff. This role involves working closely with students, teachers, employees, and families to create inclusive and effective learning environments. The role is a blend of tutor, coach, and educational strategist, focused on removing learning barriers and promoting academic achievement.
Duties & Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
General Responsibilities
- Collaborate with administration and staff regarding various discussions and decisions related to students and families
- Attend all Student Support and Wellness meetings and follow up on discussions and/or specific implementation strategies
- Attend all faculty meetings and follow up on discussions and/or specific implementation strategies
- Additional duties, such as supervision, student advising and chaperoning events
- Serve as a member of the divisional administrative team
- Engage in professional and personal development
- Participate and initiate opportunities that demonstrate one's growth, knowledge, and skills
- Hold high standards of discretion and confidentiality in handling sensitive student and family information
Students/Parents and Families Collaboration
- Hold one-on-one and small group meetings with students to strengthen executive function skills, including time management, study skills, organization, work completion, communication, and self-advocacy skills
- Assist with assignment planning, essay writing, and exam preparation
- Support an assigned caseload of students, focusing on academic skill development and individualized learning strategies
- Observe and work with individual students in class and as part of a learning support program.
- Work with students to identify their learning styles and tailor strategies to suit their needs.
- Teach techniques for note-taking, test-taking, memory retention, and information processing.
- Provide coaching on managing learning challenges such as ADHD, dyslexia, or executive functioning difficulties
- Design and implement individualized learning plans
- Maintain accurate records of student progress and interventions and monitor student progress
- Identify learning styles of individual students based on: meetings, observations, teacher meetings, parent conversations, conversations with outside resource providers and psycho-educational reports
- Interpret psycho-educational evaluations to families as needed
- Demystify learning differences to parents and students who are aware of their learning profile
- If a psycho-educational evaluation is recommended, provide the family with an appropriate match and coordinate contact
- Counsel students as needed with regard to learning and emotional issues
Faculty Collaboration
- Deliver professional development to faculty on inclusive teaching strategies.
- Teach techniques for note-taking, test-taking, memory retention, and information processing.
- Provide coaching on managing learning challenges such as ADHD, dyslexia, or executive functioning difficulties
- Provide classroom support to teachers, including co-teaching and modeling effective instructional strategies and supporting use of necessary student accommodations.
- Interpret psycho-educational evaluations to faculty, as needed
- Speak with any support specialist regarding progress and plan for communicating concerns during the meeting
- Distribute current/new accommodations to teachers and assist them in implementing recommendations
- Work as the liaison between school and any additional services
- Other duties as assigned by the division director or the Senior Administrative Team
Education and Experience
Required:
- Master’s degree, Board Certified Educational Therapist (BCET), Educational Therapist/Professional (ET/P) through the Association of Educational Therapists (AET), valid teaching credential (mild/moderate disabilities), or related experience
- Minimum of three years of experience as a learning specialist with students in middle or high school, or supporting students with diagnosed learning differences
- Strong understanding of evidence-based instructional practices and strategies that promote student organization, independence, and academic success
- Experience and expertise in reading and synthesizing neuropsychological evaluations, Section 504 plans, and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
Preferred:
- Experience working specifically with middle school–aged students (grades 6–8)
- Knowledge of current assistive technologies, neuroscience research, and differentiated instruction to support a wide range of learners
While being vaccinated for COVID-19 is not required, it is strongly recommended.
COMPENSATION: Brentwood School's diverse and talented faculty ranges widely in experience level, from those new to teaching to veterans who are experts in their respective disciplines with 30+ years of experience. Our salary range, of $93,000 - $133,000, includes all levels of experience. Salaries are determined based on years of experience, education, full- or part-time status, and number of months worked per school year. Salary ranges do not include benefits i.e. 403b retirement matching, paid lunchtime, free breakfast and lunch, free parking, subsidy toward medical, dental, vision, life/AD&D plans, and generous time off. The pay range is an estimate and is not guaranteed. If hired, your actual base salary will be determined by your education, experience, and schedule.
