The role:

We’re seeking a skilled, creative Learning Experience Designer - STEM Editor to curate and produce high-quality science, technology, engineering, and math articles, images, and videos for Newsela.

You bring expertise in STEM writing and editing, a sharp sense of what engages students, the ability to support diverse learners through accessible design, and fluency with curriculum standards and instructional best practices.

In this role, you will curate, edit, and occasionally author student- and teacher-facing STEM content; coordinate freelance writers and editors; and ensure every asset meets our standards for engagement, instructional value, accuracy, and accessibility. You’ll collaborate closely with STEM learning designers, editors, product managers, and software engineers to deliver compelling, standards-aligned materials, and you’ll leverage AI tools to streamline ideation, drafting, editing, and quality checks.

Why you’ll love this role

  • Drive real classroom impact: Curate and refine standards‑aligned STEM articles, assessments, images (photos, illustrations, and graphics), and videos for K–12 from content partners; occasionally author nonfiction articles/assessment items; ground choices in current literacy, STEM, assessment, and educational‑media research.
  • Edit with autonomy and craft: Own content selection and leveling; write age‑appropriate copy (from captions to assessment items to full articles) with a strong editorial lens for clarity, accuracy, readability, clean prose, and consistent tone across grades and STEM domains.
  • Produce with quality and speed: Review content for standards alignment and help suggest tooling to assist in this process; run final QA (metadata, guidelines, best practices); leverage AI for ideation, drafting, editing, and quality checks; streamline workflows to cut time‑to‑publish without sacrificing quality.
  • Collaborate and give feedback: Coordinate freelancers with actionable feedback to maintain quality and consistency; partner with Ops and cross‑functional teams, keep work transparent in production tools, lead or contribute initiatives that meet teacher and student needs, and earn trust to work independently and innovate.

Why you're a great fit:

  • 3+ years of professional experience in STEM content development for a publisher or educational technology company.
  • Published writing and editing experience with a strong preference for prior experience specifically writing or editing STEM content.
  • Strong knowledge of science and math standards and STEM instruction
  • Experience designing lessons and assessments for various grade levels (K-8 preferred).
  • Familiarity with educational publishing standards and instructional technology.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency with content authoring tools (e.g., Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Learning Management Systems, and digital curriculum platforms).
  • Comfort with and enthusiasm for using AI in the content development process.
Compensation:
  • Base compensation range: $62,000 - $70,000 per year.
  • Total compensation for this role also includes incentive stock options and benefits.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
