Who We’re Looking For

Revenue.io is seeking a Backend Engineering Lead to serve as the technical and cultural anchor for our Revenue Platform team. This is a true player-coach role—you’ll spend about half your time contributing hands-on to our backend systems, and the other half guiding, mentoring, and elevating the engineers around you.

You’ll lead the backend function day-to-day, driving technical direction, architecture decisions, and execution while building the people, practices, and culture that will scale with us. You’ll model engineering excellence through your own contributions while creating the environment where others can do the best work of their careers.

This is not a pure management role, but it carries real leadership responsibility: coaching engineers, driving clarity and alignment across teams, and setting the standard for how great engineering gets done.

You’ll also be at the forefront of our transition to generative AI–powered software development, helping integrate AI tooling across the SDLC to reshape how we plan, build, test, release, and operate software.

What You’ll Do
  • Split your time between leading and contributing, spending roughly 50% hands-on building backend systems and 50% coaching, mentoring, and driving team execution.
  • Individually contribute to complex, high-impact backend projects, delivering performant, secure, maintainable code that sets the standard for engineering excellence.
  • Provide technical leadership for the backend team, setting direction, guiding architectural decisions, and ensuring high-quality, predictable delivery across initiatives.
  • Act as a force multiplier for the team—reviewing designs and code, unblocking engineers, raising the quality bar, and building a culture of ownership and accountability.
  • Mentor and develop engineers through feedback, pairing, and career guidance—helping them grow technically and professionally.
  • Serve as the primary point of alignment between backend engineering and cross-functional partners (Product, QA, DevOps, Security, and leadership), ensuring clear communication and collaboration.
  • Lead technical investigations and spikes to de-risk decisions, shape platform strategy, and introduce new technologies and patterns into the stack.
  • Drive adoption of generative AI tooling across the SDLC, helping the team leverage AI to accelerate development, testing, and operational workflows.
  • Own resolution of the most complex production issues, coordinating team response, leading postmortems, and implementing systemic fixes.
  • Continuously evolve team practices and standards, including code review discipline, observability patterns, testing strategies, and operational playbooks.
What You Bring
  • Proven technical leadership experience driving backend engineering efforts as a Lead, Staff, or Principal Engineer in high-scale SaaS environments (preferably early- to mid-stage startups).
  • 8+ years of backend development experience with deep expertise in Java, Spring Boot, REST API design, and distributed systems architecture.
  • Track record of delivering production-grade platforms and platform services with high reliability, security, scalability, and performance.
  • Hands-on experience with modern infrastructure and tooling including PostgreSQL, Redis, AWS, CI/CD pipelines, observability frameworks, and cloud-native development practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to grow and elevate other engineers through mentorship, coaching, and structured feedback—building strong engineering culture and raising the performance bar.
  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear language for executives, peers, and cross-functional partners.
  • Experience leading technical design discussions, postmortems, and roadmap planning, aligning stakeholders and influencing decisions through clarity, data, and vision.
  • Proven ability to drive adoption of emerging technologies, especially generative AI tools, to accelerate software delivery and improve team workflows.
  • Calm and decisive under pressure, with deep expertise in diagnosing and resolving the most complex production incidents quickly and transparently.
  • A builder’s mindset and a leadership trajectory—you combine hands-on engineering excellence with the drive and potential to grow into broader team leadership responsibilities.
Who You Are
  • You’re a player-coach: you contribute at a very high level technically, but your greatest impact comes from how you elevate everyone around you.
  • You’re a builder, mentor, and force multiplier—you lead by example, setting the standard for code quality, delivery, and collaboration while helping others reach that same bar.
  • You are a model of engineering excellence and communication, consistently delivering high-quality work while ensuring clarity, alignment, and strong partnerships across functions.
  • You take pride in developing people, not just shipping code—coaching engineers, growing future leaders, and building a high-performing, high-trust team culture.
  • You’re a generative-native leader, leveraging AI tools to transform how software gets built, tested, and delivered—and inspiring others to do the same.
  • You see ambiguity as an opportunity to create clarity, and you move fast, even when the path forward isn’t fully mapped.
  • You’re calm and decisive under pressure, especially during production incidents, and you turn every challenge into an opportunity to strengthen the team.
  • You’re not just here to deliver features—you’re here to shape how great engineering gets done and to build the people who will carry it forward.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
