Job Description

Role Overview

We’re hiring a Lead Python Developer to help us build, scale, and optimize a suite of modern, AI-powered, cloud-native applications. In this role, you'll not only architect and develop serverless backend systems on AWS but also help define development best practices, guide engineering standards, and mentor others across the team.

You’ll work closely with product, AI/ML engineers, DevOps, and front-end developers to bring new capabilities to life—particularly in the areas of automation, AI integrations, shared agent tools, and scalable APIs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and lead development of Python-based backend systems using AWS serverless services: Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, Step Functions, SQS, and S3.
  • Define and enforce clean, maintainable code standards, architecture patterns, and scalable API design.
  • Act as a technical lead and mentor, reviewing code and coaching other developers on architecture, patterns, and quality.
  • Collaborate with DevOps and infrastructure teams to support CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions) and IaC (Terraform).
  • Integrate with external services and internal systems, including OpenAI, Google AI, and other LLM providers.
  • Implement observability best practices using AWS-native tools (CloudWatch, X-Ray, etc.).
  • Work cross-functionally to understand product goals and align technical solutions.
  • Help shape hiring decisions and technical evaluations for future team expansion.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field.
  • 7+ years of professional Python development experience, ideally in backend-heavy or infrastructure-oriented roles.
  • Strong hands-on experience with AWS serverless architectures: Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, Step Functions, and S3.
  • Proven success designing and implementing microservices and event-driven systems.
  • Deep understanding of Python best practices (type hinting, modularization, error handling, dependency management, testing).
  • Experience with auth mechanisms such as OAuth, JWT, Cognito, or IAM.
  • Proficiency with GitHub, GitHub Actions, and collaboration workflows.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform preferred or AWS CDK).
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills; ability to guide and influence team direction.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a mindset focused on performance, scalability, and resilience.

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • AWS Certified Developer – Associate or similar certifications that demonstrate hands-on expertise with cloud-native AWS development.
  • Python certification (e.g., PCEP, PCAP, PCPP1/2, or equivalent) that validates mastery of Python development standards and best practices.
  • Experience working with LLMs or AI/ML frameworks such as OpenAI, Google AI, Hugging Face, or LangChain.
  • Exposure to Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) or AI-enhanced document processing and knowledge search architectures.
  • Familiarity with real-time communication technologies, including WebSockets, GraphQL, gRPC, and REST APIs.
  • Prior experience mentoring or leading development teams, including involvement in hiring, code reviews, and architectural decision-making.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
