Title: Lead Product Manager, AI

Location: Austin, TX / San Jose, CA (Hybrid)

Reporting to: Chief Product Officer

About Hippo:

Hippo exists to protect the joy of homeownership. We believe that insurance should protect the things you treasure through an intuitive, modern experience. We provide tailored insurance coverage and preventative maintenance plans that keep you protected throughout your homeowner journey. We’ll also help you find coverage for everything life brings—from auto to flood—reimagining how you care for your home.

About This Role:

Hippo is looking for a Lead Product Manager, AI to identify, build, and scale high-impact AI-powered products across our business — driving growth, operational excellence, and seamless customer experiences.

This is a hands-on, 0→1 builder role. You’ll work with small, scrappy cross-functional teams to move quickly from problem discovery to prototype to production. Success in this role means shipping real AI solutions, learning fast, and translating emerging technology into measurable business impact.

You’ll partner closely with Product, Engineering, Data, Operations, and Business teams to ensure AI is deployed responsibly, transparently, compliantly, and effectively.

You will be the champion and evangelist of AI internally with both technical and non-technical teams to continue to unlock more use cases and value across the organization.

If you are passionate about harnessing AI to transform operations, risk management, and customer experiences into best-in-class capabilities, this is the role for you.

What You'll Do:

  • Identify and own high-impact AI opportunities across Hippo’s products and operations, grounded in real customer and business problems across service, claims, underwriting, finance, product teams, and end-customers
  • Build and ship AI-powered products — working hands-on with engineers, data scientists, and third-party tools to prototype, test, deploy, and iterate in production
  • Lead end-to-end product execution, from problem framing and success metrics through launch, adoption, and continuous improvement
  • Make smart build vs. buy decisions and define MVP scopes that balance speed, quality, and long-term scalability
  • Design effective human-AI workflows that are intuitive, trustworthy, and aligned with how teams actually work
  • Champion responsible AI practices, partnering with the AI Committee to ensure transparency, explainability, and compliance
  • Evangelize and build momentum through delivery, then help teams adopt and extend successful AI solutions across the organization

Must Haves:

  • 6+ years of product management experience in building high-impact products and features, with at least 1 years of working with AI products.
  • 2+ years of product management experience in insurance or other regulated financial services.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate ambiguous business problems into shipped solutions with measurable impact
  • Comfort rolling up their sleeves to shape MVPs, workflows, experiments, and early production systems
  • Thinks end-to-end from data inputs to model outputs to user experience and business outcomes
  • Passion for emerging technologies and hands-on experience with latest AI models & tools. Excited to help Hippo build trust-centered AI experiences.
  • Experience shipping products from early concept through launch and iteration in real-world environments
  • Strong understanding of the AI/ML product lifecycle (data readiness, modeling, deployment, monitoring, iteration)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or equivalent practical experience

Nice to Haves:

  • Advanced degree (MS or MBA)
  • Experience with AI governance, model risk management, or explainability frameworks
  • Insurance certifications (CPCU, ARe) or analytics certifications

Benefits and Perks

Hippo treats its team members with the same level of dedication and care as we do our customers, which is why we’re fortunate to provide all of our Hippos with:

  • Healthy Hippos Benefits - Multiple medical plans to choose from and 100% employer covered dental & vision plans for our team members and their families. We also offer a 401(k)-retirement plan, short & long-term disability, employer-paid life insurance, Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) for health and dependent care, and an Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
