We are currently looking for a Lead Data Scientist (Individual Contributor) to join us. This individual will operate as an individual contributor (IC) and partner with eBay Paid Marketing team along with other cross functional teams to meet their analytic needs and conduct extensive analyses of eBay's rich data, generating insights, and communicating those insights to the team to guide the project roadmap. In the process, this person will develop a deep understanding of eBay Marketplaces and site functionality, further strengthen their analytical, leadership, and presentation skills, and gain exposure to a wide variety of functional teams within eBay!
This Lead Data Scientist will bring strong technical, analytical, and strategic strengths with a deep background in statistics, mathematics, and/or engineering. We are looking for a very customer-focused Data Science Professional with who can contribute and build breakthrough, outstanding analytical solutions to help solve sophisticated problems and drive key business decisions! Analytics at eBay is a multidisciplinary craft and it is foundational; it is a strategic arm that heavily influences critical decisions made by eBay leaders.
As a Lead Data Scientist, qualified candidates will also assume leadership responsibilities for departmental activities/responsibilities, including:
- Advising, guiding, and counseling junior staff members as and when needed to ensure full team alignment and compliance with eBay Marketplaces policies and procedures.
- Identifying, recruiting, hiring, developing, and mentoring top talent within team.
- Act as a functional leader for assigned Business areas/domains including defining Analytics roadmap, guiding Business strategy and influencing decision making
Primary Job Responsibilities
- Build close partnership with the business and product teams to Innovate, identify and Explore new analytics and operational opportunities to help get results to enable the Business Units to supervise and drive initiatives.
- Identify, quantify, prioritize, test, launch and supervise improvements in business initiatives, marketing programs, website experience or policy changes.
- Key “go-to” person to provide thought leadership and recommendations to future business direction partnering with business and product teams
- Function as a liaison across multiple product or business domain teams and take ownership of driving analytics impact into cross-department initiatives.
- Evaluate performance of tested features and programs and deliver final test results in a clear, concise and actionable manner.
- Post-launch monitoring: measure performance of features and programs post launch and report back to product and business teams
- Communicate findings to partners, product management, business and product development teams.
- Promote a self-serve analytics culture for the organization by educating partners on key reports, data, and interpretation standard processes.
Job Skills required:

- A proven track record of end to end analytics - problem definition, collating the required information, analyzing the results, synthesizing and presenting a compelling argument and influencing collaborators to act
- Ability to collaborate with key partners in a highly matrixed environment including regional business teams, product, technology, and finance in order to plan and implement eBay's analytics roadmap.
- Experience with data and analytical tools including R and Python. Knowledge of statistics (e.g., multivariate statistics, predictive modeling, controlled test design).
- Ability to identify and take on critical projects, as well as lead multiple projects simultaneously in a dynamic, changing environment. Excellent time management, willingness to take calculated risks and make decisions with imperfect information.
- Prior experience or deep knowledge of Performance Marketing including Paid Search, Affiliate Marketing, Programmatic Display & Social or related fields will be highly preferred.
Desired Qualifications:
- BTech/BE/BS/BA degree (ideally in a quantitative field such in Engineering, Statistics, Applied Econometrics, Math, Physics, Computer Science, other related Core Sciences or equivalent) with 8+ years of experience in analytics and exposure to varied functions within analytics/finance OR Master’s degree in similar field/MBA and 6+ years of experience in analytics and exposure to varied functions within analytics/finance
- Advanced Excel, PowerPoint skills and database query skills (e.g., Teradata SQL, SparkSQL); and an understanding of data warehouse architecture, impacting large domain/business unit results and partner relationships
- Experience with Hadoop/Hive/Python/R/R Shiny and Tableau, ideally in web analytics or at a leading management consulting, financial services or marketing company.
- At least 1-2 years of experience as business partner to senior executives in a business unit within an organization, with proven results and exceptional quantitative and qualitative analytic impact
- Effective project leader who understands business problems and current business trends, responsible for improving financial and business performance.
- Real-world problem-solving experience for business using Data Science and Machine Learning a plus.
The pay range for this position at commencement of employment in California, Washington, or New York is expected in the range below.
$144,000 - $227,700
Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including location, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a target bonus and restricted stock units (as applicable) in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as PTO and parental leave). Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
If hired, employees will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
