OVERVIEW:

DICK’S Sporting Goods is seeking a strategic and highly experienced Lead Data & Insights Analyst to support our Teammate Analytics - Operations organization with a concentrated focus on store inventory accuracy, shrink analytics, RFID technology, and inventory movement across the store network. This role will also flex into broader operational domains including labor, store processes, eComm fulfillment, and in‑store logistics. 

The ideal candidate brings deep analytical expertise, strong operational intuition, experience with inventory processes—from cycle counts using RFID to store transfers and store-pickup—combined with the ability to tell a clear, compelling story that influences senior leadership.

JOB PURPOSE: 

Sitting at the intersection of Store Operations, Supply Chain, Merchandising, and Technology, the Lead Data & Insights Analyst drives end-to-end analytical strategy with an inventory first lens. They leverage data to improve inventory accuracy, optimize intrastore and interstore product flow, enhance shrink visibility, and support emerging inventory technologies. 

In this role, the Lead Data & Insights Analyst partners with operations leaders, technologists, data engineers, and business stakeholders to define measurement strategies, uncover insights, guide test-and-learn programs, and shape data-driven decision making. They operate with autonomy, own complex workstreams, and serve as a trusted advisor to business and technology partners within a domain, and are recognized by partners for deep knowledge and expertise in data domains and analytical best practices.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

With little guidance, and primarily operating autonomously in work creation, stakeholder engagement and process development, this individual is responsible for developing strategic analyses rooted in data, servicing ad-hoc analytics requests and stakeholder questions, and contributing to analytical initiatives and deliverables. The Lead Data & Insights Analyst is also responsible for coaching and upskilling more junior analysts, without direct managerial responsibilities. 

Business Stakeholder & Strategy Support  

  • Serve as a strategic advisor to Store Ops, LP, Supply Chain, Merchandising, and Technology leaders 

  • Translate complex data into actionable insights that inform operational strategy, particularly concerning store inventory but inclusive of general processes

  • Lead proactive discoveries to identify opportunities and diagnose root causes in store inventory, store-to-store transfers, fulfillment accuracy, and receiving processes.  

  • Partner closely with Data Engineering to define data model requirements, prototype inventory performance reporting, and shape scalable pipeline needs for inventory datasets (RFID, cycle counts, transfers, ASN alignment, etc.).

 Analytics & Measurement 

  • Function as the subject matter expert for store-inventory analytics, shrink, and store logistics, while supporting broader operations domains as needed. 

  • Design and execute complex analytical work—including variance analysis, regression, segmentations, and test measurement frameworks (A/B, Diff-in-Diff, and natural experiments). 

  • Lead the design, measurement, and interpretation of in-store experiments, including technology and process initiatives (RFID enhancements, fulfillment process changes, receiving or transfer procedures). 

  • Build and maintain common inventory metrics, definitions, and benchmarks to create a clear and consistent operational measurement framework across the enterprise. 

  • Perform advanced data analysis using SQL (GCP or Databricks), Python/R, and related tools to produce impactful insights with clear, actionable recommendations. 

  • Partner with Data Science and Technology teams to support model development (forecasting, allocation logic, shrink prediction, inventory optimization) and inform measurement strategies. 

 

Team Leadership & Development 

  • Assist managers in mentoring and coaching analysts across the organization in analytical best practices, inventory measurement, and tooling.  

  • Elevate analytical maturity across Store Ops by establishing repeatable frameworks, reusable code, and consistent inventory measurement practices.  

  • Lead knowledge-sharing efforts on inventory accuracy, shrink analytics, RFID data structures, and operational test design. 

Industry Knowledge & Benchmarking 

  • Mentor and coach analysts across the organization in analytical best practices, inventory measurement, and tooling.  

  • Elevate analytical maturity across Store Ops by establishing repeatable frameworks, reusable code, and consistent inventory measurement practices.  

  • Lead knowledge-sharing efforts on inventory accuracy, shrink analytics, RFID data structures, and operational test design. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

Technical Skills: 

  • Advanced SQL; advanced R and/or Python 

  • Strong experience in Databricks, GCP, or Azure 

  • Deep expertise with BI tools (Tableau, PowerBI, Qlik) 

  • Mastery of test-and-learn design (A/B, MVT, DiffinDiff) and tools (APT/MarketDial preferred) 

Inventory & Operations Expertise: 

  • Experience with inventory accuracy analytics, shrink measurement, cycle counting, RFID, inventory reconciliation, and store receiving/transfers 

  • Understanding of allocation, replenishment, and store/DC handoff processes 

  • Background in evaluating fulfillment accuracy (BOPIS, ship-from-store) and process defects 

Analytical Skills: 

  • Data model development 

  • Econometric and regression modeling 

  • Forecasting, simulations, segmentation, clustering 

  • KPI creation, rationalization, and metric stewardship 

Communication & Influence: 

  • Exceptional ability to translate analysis into clear narratives 

  • Skilled in executive storytelling, PowerPoint development, and data visualization 

  • Proven ability to influence senior leaders 

Experience: 

  • 6+ years in analytics with 2-4 years supporting retail, merchant operations, inventory, or supply chain 

  • Retail or B2C environment strongly preferred 

QUALIFICATIONS:

General Education 

  • Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent Level Preferred in Economics, Statistics, Liberal Arts or Related Field 

General Experience 

  • 6+ Years of Experience 

  • SQL, R, Python, experience with BI tools (Tableau, Qlik, PowerBI); Testing and Optimization Tools; GCP or Azure Experience

Targeted Pay Range: $76,500.00 - $124,600.00. This is part of a competitive total rewards package that could include other components such as: incentive, equity and benefits. Individual pay is determined by a number of factors including experience, location, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations.
