About Hopscotch Primary Care

At Hopscotch Primary Care, we believe great healthcare should be accessible to all people across all communities.  Today, almost 20% of Americans live in a rural community, yet only 11% of physicians practice in those same communities.  We are on a mission to transform healthcare in rural America.  We provide high-quality primary care tailored to meet the needs of our patients through our robust care model and comprehensive care team, delivering care in our clinics, and across settings, and wrapping resources around the patients who need them most.

Our patients and the care teams who serve them sit at the center of everything we do at Hopscotch.  Hopscotch Primary Care takes a team approach to serve patient needs and provide the best care possible.  Our goal is to provide the care each of us would want for ourselves or for our family members, in the right setting, and at the right time.

Today, we are serving thousands of patients in our value-based care model and the number is growing every day.  If you want to bring your experience, skill and passion to make a lasting impact in healthcare, we’d like to meet you.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for a Lead Data Engineer (remote) to own and evolve the backbone of our data platform. This role is for a hands-on builder who thrives at the intersection of data engineering, software architecture, and pragmatic problem solving. You’ll design and scale the systems that ensure our data is trustworthy, accessible, and ready to power everything from day-to-day operations to next-generation AI applications. This role will report to the Director of Engineering. While this is not a people manager role, you will serve as a technical leader on the team, mentoring junior engineers, raising the bar on engineering fundamentals, and helping shape the long-term direction of our data ecosystem. You will be part of a skilled, passionate, and collaborative team committed to working together to realize Hopscotch’s ambitious and important vision.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Own our data platform: architect, build, and maintain our data model, data pipelines, and data access layer that support our care delivery, operations, and analytics.
  • Ensure data quality & governance: implement practices that make our data trustworthy and usable for all stakeholders, from clinicians to operators.
  • Monitor and optimize data infrastructure: troubleshoot issues, improve system performance, and drive efficiency through automation and process enhancements.
  • Lead with technical depth: review code, mentor engineers, and set engineering best practices across the team.
  • Think big picture: design today’s infrastructure with tomorrow’s needs in mind, laying the foundation for advanced analytics and AI.
  • Be hands-on: flex across the stack, from backend data engineering to occasional contributions in frontend applications that bring data to life.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams: work with product managers, analytics, operations, and care delivery stakeholders to translate business needs into scalable data solutions.

ABOUT YOU

You would be a great fit for this position if you:

  • Can run with problems; take high-level business and technical challenges, frame them into actionable work, and deliver solutions with minimal oversight.
  • Are customer-focused – with a passion for serving patients and providers who make healthcare possible
  • Are results-driven, focusing time and resources against the most important priorities
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and bring a structured, proactive approach to executing
  • Energized by building relationships and finding creative solutions
  • Articulate and succinct with communication about complex concepts, both verbally and in writing

From a cultural perspective, you are:

  • Agile, yet thoughtful, and can work effectively in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment
  • Constantly seeking ways to simplify and improve how things are done, bringing a positive attitude to challenges
  • Accountable, holding yourself, and others, to a high standard
  • Supportive of teammates and aim to share knowledge with others
  • Willing to roll up your sleeves to get work done and collaborate effectively with people of all backgrounds

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of professional experience in data engineering and software architecture shipping production level code, preferably in healthcare services
  • Strong programming skills (Python, Pyspark, or similar) with proven experience in building and scaling reusable, testable, and maintainable data pipelines
  • Experience designing and optimizing data models, warehouses, and/or lakehouses
  • Familiarity with modern data platforms and cloud ecosystems (ex. Palantir Foundry, DBT, Databricks, Snowflake, AWS/GCP/Azure).
  • Track record of ensuring data quality, governance, and reliability
  • Ability to balance high-level architecture with tactical execution

In accordance with the Illinois Pay Transparency Act, we’re providing the full salary range for this position. Actual compensation will be determined based on location, relevant experience and qualifications. Most offers will fall within a portion of the listed range. This position has a salary range of $130,000 – $190,000 annually, based on location, relevant experience and qualifications. In addition to base salary, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes:

  • Company sponsored medical, dental, and vision insurance for you + your family
  • FREE short-term and long-term disability insurance
  • FREE $100k life insurance policy
  • 401k plan with 4% company match + no vesting period
  • $720 - $1,000 added to employee Health Savings Account annually for eligible health plans
  • And more!

At Hopscotch Primary Care, we embrace diversity, invest in a culture of inclusion and positivity and encourage all to apply to join our team.  You will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
