As a Lead Backend Engineer, you'll design and implement secure APIs, optimize cloud infrastructure, and manage data pipelines for geospatial data at Mach9.
The summary above was generated by AI
The role:

At Mach9, Backend Engineers build the secure, scalable services that turn terabytes of raw geospatial data into lightning‑fast insights for our users. You’ll partner with perception and platform teams to design APIs, data pipelines, and cloud infrastructure that keep our web‑based CAD tools responsive—no matter the dataset size.

This role is ideal for engineers who love wrangling cloud infrastructure, optimizing performance and costs, and shipping rock‑solid services that developers and customers trust.

You’ll own everything from databases to devops, scaling our backend infrastructure as we set out to make every map.

Where you will make an impact:
  • Architect and implement secure, high‑performance APIs and micro‑services in Python and TypeScript

  • Design data pipelines that process and serve massive point‑cloud and imagery datasets with low latency

  • Drive cloud‑cost optimization across AWS, choosing the right services, instances, and storage strategies

  • Implement robust access‑control models (RBAC, ACLs, IAM policies) that protect sensitive customer data

  • Collaborate with perception and product teams to ship end‑to‑end features—owning backend design decisions from concept through monitoring in production

  • Level‑up our observability stack, with logging/tracing, monitoring, dashboards, and alerts

What you bring:
  • 6+ years of experience building and operating production backends or infrastructure‑heavy systems

  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, and TypeScript (Node.js) for service development, scripting, and tooling

  • Hands‑on experience with at least one major cloud provider (AWS strongly preferred)

  • Deep understanding of authorization / access‑control paradigms (RBAC, ACL, ABAC, OIDC/OAuth)

  • Comfort diagnosing performance bottlenecks, balancing trade‑offs between speed, cost, and reliability

  • Experience architecting, maintaining, optimizing, and scaling data infrastructure leveraging a deep knowledge of databases and other distributed systems

  • Experience with or interest in managing point cloud or geospatial data

About Mach9

Mach9 is transforming civil infrastructure design with AI‑powered geospatial tools. Our platform accelerates the creation of engineering deliverables from raw data, cutting manual drafting time by 96×. Trusted by global leaders in engineering and construction, we’re backed by Y Combinator, Quiet Capital, and top founders and executives from Cruise, Autodesk, Adobe, and DoorDash.

We believe the needs of a startup benefit from an in‑person culture. The team works out of our office in SoMa, with the flexibility to work from home when needed.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
