About Sound Ventures

At Sound, we believe inspiration beats convention, and that the best founders aren’t just solving problems; they’re rewriting the rules.

For the last 15 years, we’ve invested thematically in category-defining companies at the forefront of major technology platform shifts. We seek out founders with relentless ambition and bold ideas, backing them before the rest of the world sees what’s coming.

Our portfolio includes early investments in Affirm, Airbnb, Airtable, Anthropic, Duolingo, EquipmentShare, GitLab, OpenAI, SentinelOne, and Uber, among others.

Sound Ventures is led by General Partners Effie Epstein, Ashton Kutcher, and Guy Oseary and manages $1.5B across a series of early-stage funds and thematic funds.

The Role

We are hiring a junior investor (analyst, associate, senior associate) to join our investment team. Each role on our team is a high-impact role for someone who is deeply curious about technology, markets, and people — and who is excited to develop new points of view.

We are open to candidates coming from professional services (investment banking, management consulting), investing (VC, growth, PE), operating (front row seat to scale), or technical background (product/engineering). What matters most is intellectual horsepower, ownership mentality, and the ability to identify and evaluate what should exist next.

We are a highly collaborative, lean team. Since we operate in a fast-paced and relatively unstructured environment, you will wear many hats and need to be able to quickly adjust as such. No matter what it takes to get the job done, you can be counted on to deliver, and deliver something exceptional. This role is ideal for someone who wants real exposure to decision-making, founder relationships, and long-term company building.

What You’ll Do
  • Source and evaluate investment opportunities across tech ecosystem

  • Develop and refine investment theses on markets, technologies, and cultural inflection points

  • Support in end-to-end diligence: investment memos, market mapping, competitive analysis, customer and expert calls, and financial modeling

  • Work closely with founders from first meeting through investment and beyond

  • Support portfolio companies on strategic thinking, hiring, and growth initiatives

  • Help represent Sound in the broader tech and founder ecosystem

Who You Are
  • 2+ years of total experience in investment banking, consulting, investing, consulting, startups, or a related field

  • Relentlessly curious and resourceful — you go deep on ideas before you’re asked and you’re always connecting dots

  • A self-starter who thrives with autonomy and is relentlessly resourceful

  • Open-minded and intellectually honest

  • Strong analytical and communication skills — you can move seamlessly from narrative to numbers

  • Excited by early-stage ambiguity and long-term thinking

  • Eager to engage with founders and senior leaders and resourceful about building relationships and finding your way into the right rooms

  • High EQ with sharp interpersonal instincts

Why Sound
  • Exposure to category-defining founders and companies at the early stages

  • A small, highly engaged team with real responsibility and trust

  • The opportunity to help shape investment decisions, not just support them

  • A culture that values independent thinking, creativity, and conviction

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
