Description

ConsumerAffairs is hiring an Investigative Reporter who is driven to make a difference.
If you’re passionate about empowering consumers, exposing harmful practices, and digging into stories that impact everyday people’s health, safety, and financial security — this is the role for you.

Who You Are

You’re a journalist with a proven record of reporting on consumer-focused topics. Maybe you’ve covered finance, technology, health care, housing, or product safety. You ask tough questions, follow the data, and don’t stop until the truth is out. You thrive when given autonomy and are constantly pitching stories that deserve attention. You’re excited about bringing compelling, creative investigations to life — not just in words, but with data, visuals, and multimedia storytelling.

What You’ll Do
  • Generate hard-hitting investigative pieces and short-term accountability stories.
  • Pursue leads through open records requests, data analysis, and community sourcing.
  • Collaborate with editorial staff, data journalists, SEO experts, and other team members.
  • Shape stories with impact in mind — contacting stakeholders, engaging with communities, and working toward real-world change.
  • Envision each story as a full package, incorporating multimedia elements like photos, video, audio, and data visualizations.
  • Manage your own projects and deadlines in a fully remote environment, while staying connected with a collaborative team.
Requirements

Required:

  • 3+ years of professional journalism experience.
  • Background covering consumer-related issues (e.g., health, tech, finance, housing, business, product safety).
  • A portfolio of impactful reporting that exposes wrongdoing or sheds light on important problems.
  • Excellent narrative writing skills and a knack for keeping readers engaged.
  • Experience analyzing data in Google Sheets or Excel.
  • Familiarity with public records processes (FOIA, etc.) and government datasets.

Bonus Points For:

  • Investigative reporting experience with national reach or measurable community impact.
  • Data journalism skills in SQL, R, or Python.
  • Multimedia storytelling skills — audio, video, photography, or social media.
  • A history of stories that influenced policy, led to reform, or created public conversation.
Benefits
  • Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
  • Retirement Plan (401k)
  • Life Insurance (Basic, Voluntary & AD&D)
  • Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Public Holidays)
  • Family Leave (Maternity, Paternity)
  • Short Term & Long Term Disability
  • Training & Development

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
