CampusWorks is seeking transformational Interim, Project-Based CIOs who can travel and consult nationwide with our higher education client institutions.  These engagements may range from short-term to long-term, requiring an on-site presence and/or a hybrid arrangement, depending on the client needs.

The Interim Chief Information Officer is responsible for aligning IT strategy with institutional goals, leveraging technology for innovation and efficiency in higher education, and developing broad relationships with the campus community. They oversee all aspects of IT planning, budgeting, and support, requiring a deep understanding of the institution's operations and technical expertise to lead and coordinate IT teams effectively. The Interim CIO leads the IT team comprised of both remote and on-campus team members. Together, they develop and implement IT infrastructure and best practices to improve IT services and practices for an organization seeking to enhance IT and operational maturity, build a high-performing IT team, and align IT strategy with institutional goals. Proficiencies in IT governance, leadership, change management, and stakeholder relations are crucial for success in this pivotal role.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with senior management, business and academic units, and technology vendors to earn trust and alignment between the IT function and the rest of the institution.
  • Possess the ability to develop a complete understanding of the client institution, its mission, strategy, market, strengths, and issues.
  • Lead IT planning and alignment by developing and executing a comprehensive IT Strategic Plan. 
  • Ensure IT initiatives, projects, and funding are approved and prioritized by establishing an effective IT governance structure that includes relevant business, academic, and student representation. 
  • Function as a good steward of the institution’s budgets and resources ensuring optimal return on investment. 
  • Provide leadership for competitive technology procurements, vendor negotiations, and vendor partnerships by managing IT vendors’ and service providers’ contracts and delivery on behalf of the institution. 
  • Develop and recommend information technology policies to ensure the appropriate acquisition, use, security, and cost-effective application of technology. 
  • Lead the IT department, which may include overseeing technology infrastructure, systems, enterprise applications, and the user experience through end user support. 
  • Research and evaluate new technologies to be used as enhancements or upgrades to existing server, network, and other IT infrastructure equipment. 
  • Stay current on the latest IT trends and best practices, continuously seeking opportunities to improve the institution’s technological capabilities. 

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, business, or related field. 
  • 10+ years of experience working as a CIO or CTO in higher education
  • Knowledge of higher education technologies and systems. 
  • Experience with, and a broad understanding of, higher education challenges and the application of technology solutions in resolving those challenges.   
  • Demonstrated leadership traits and highly effective oral and written communication skills  
  • Experience in leading diverse groups to an agreed upon outcome that is aligned with the best interest of the institution. 
  • Demonstrated agility to respond to changing institutional priorities. 
  • Ability to lead an organization through change and transformation. 
  • Ability to lead people and foster an environment of positive employee engagement and trust throughout the organization. 

  • Preferred:
  • Master’s degree 
  • ITIL certification 
  • PMP certification 
  • CompTIA ITF+, A+, Network+, and Server+ certifications   
  • Experience with higher education specific software i.e. (Banner/Colleague/Jenzabar/Workday ERPs, Canvas/Moodle/Blackboard LMS)
