What You’ll Do
As an Intellectual Property Attorney at Tempus, you’ll be responsible for safeguarding the innovative ideas and discoveries that drive Tempus forward. Key responsibilities include collaborating with R&D and Product teams, managing patent and trademark portfolios and staying current on IP law. You will work directly with Tempus scientists, engineers and product teams to identify and capture new, patentable innovations and trademarks. You will evaluate inventions, conduct prior art searches to determine patentability and advise on overall IP strategy. Additionally, you will prepare and file patent and trademark applications and manage prosecution of these applications both domestically and internationally with external IP counsel. You will review and edit internal and external publications and communications to mitigate business and legal risks. In furtherance of Tempus’ overall business strategies, you will provide guidance on patent and trademark strategy, portfolio management, IP risk, while maintaining up-to-date knowledge of IP laws, industry trends and best practices.
Required Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree in a science or engineering discipline is required (Master’s degree or Ph.D. is a plus)
Licensed to Practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office USPTO
Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and licensed to practice law in the US
Prior experience in patent preparation and prosecution at either a technology or life sciences company or a law firm
4+ years of experience
Strong knowledge and understanding of US patent law
Working knowledge of trademark and copyright law is a plus
Working knowledge of EU patent law is a plus
Ability to think strategically, while driving and owning initiatives
Highly adaptable and flexible; able to navigate competing priorities
Excellent analytical, organizational, verbal and written communication skills to manage complex projects and communicate technical concepts effectively
Chi: $150,000-$200,000
The expected salary range above is applicable if the role is performed from Illinois and may vary for other locations (California, Colorado, New York). Actual salary may vary based on qualifications and experience. Tempus offers a full range of benefits, which may include incentive compensation, restricted stock units, medical and other benefits depending on the position.
