Join Branch as an Intern or Junior Industrial Designer

Location: San Francisco (onsite in our studio)
Type: Full-time

Industrial design consultancy Branch is seeking motivated interns and junior industrial designers with a strong foundation in design principles, an eye for detail, and a passion for shaping exceptional products.

Located in San Francisco's Jackson Square neighborhood, Branch is recognized for creating meaningful, lasting design. At Branch, we design with intention—considering every detail while crafting products that positively impact people and the world. Our process is hands-on, rooted in sketches, models, and prototypes that bring ideas to life. From furniture to electronics, we believe in designing by doing.

We work across diverse industries—including beauty, technology, and housewares—partnering with companies from Fortune 500s to start-ups to bring bold ideas into reality through thoughtful, deliberate design.

If you’re eager to learn, contribute, and grow alongside some of the best in the industry, we’d love to design something great together.

What you’ll do:

  • Generate and refine design concepts through sketching, CAD, models, and quick prototypes

  • Iterate on form, CMF, usability, and brand expression

  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and brand teams to bring products to market

  • Create clear presentations and visual assets for client and internal reviews

  • Manage multiple projects, balancing timelines and quality

  • Define objectives, explore materials, and factor in manufacturing early

  • Produce accurate CAD models and polished renderings to convey design intent

  • Support prototyping and testing (3D prints, physical models) to guide improvements

  • Prepare documentation and specifications for manufacturing partners

  • Stay current with design trends, tools, and methods

  • Work in an apprentice-style environment with close mentorship from senior designers

Must-haves:

  • Up to 3 years of professional or studio experience in Industrial Design (interns/juniors evaluated on experience level)

  • Bachelor’s degree (or working towards graduation) in Industrial Design or related field

  • Portfolio showcasing sketches, renderings, prototypes, and finished products

  • Passion for innovation and awareness of design trends

  • Strong sketching, rendering, and visual communication skills

  • Proficiency with 2D/3D tools (Adobe, SolidWorks, Rhino, Keyshot, etc.)

  • Experience with prototyping methods and model-making tools

  • Curiosity about materials, manufacturing, and engineering

  • Team-oriented, adaptable, and collaborative

  • Clear communication and presentation abilities

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
