At Totara, our strength is the speed and quality with which we help customers get value from our products. We’re hiring an Implementation Engineer (Customizations & Integrations) to deliver customer-facing technical services across implementations, upgrades, integrations, and ongoing support.
This is not a core product engineering role. You will write code, but code is one of several tools you’ll use to deliver outcomes—alongside configuration, troubleshooting, documentation, and coordination with internal teams. The work is a mix of customer “quick wins,” extensions/customizations, and technical delivery that keeps customers successful.
You’ll partner closely with customers and internal teams (including DevOps / Security / Infrastructure and R&D) to translate requirements into working solutions, communicate tradeoffs clearly, and ship improvements safely. You’ll also use AI-assisted workflows to move faster (test/design/scripting support) while handling customer data responsibly and following Totara security expectations.
Critical Responsibilities:
- Translate customer business and/or training requirements into functional and technical requirements to be realized within the TotaraGov product
- Support of implementations including assisting with configuration, customized plugins and integration of the Totara product
- Manage client upgrades to new version releases including upgrade, regression testing, and remediation
- Empower continued client success through the delivery of ongoing enhancements and plugin development
- Provide production support through the review, troubleshooting, and resolution of support requests
- Work closely with DevOps, Security and Infrastructure teams to ensure compliance with current standards and guidelines
- Develop documentation for both technical and business level resources
- Support sales team members with new business pursuits through the translation and estimation of prospective client's training requirements into functional Totara solutions that drive business value
- Deliver “quick win” scripts/tools and lightweight automations that reduce repetitive work and improve customer outcomes (in partnership with engineering for heavier lifts).
- Use AI-assisted workflows to accelerate solutioning, scripting, and testing—without entering sensitive customer/government data into unapproved tools.
- Partner with Engineering for escalations and longer-horizon product changes; this role primarily delivers customer-specific implementation work and extensions rather than owning core product roadmap delivery.
Required Skills:
- 2-4 years of experience with Vue or equivalent experience with other JS frameworks (i.e. React)
- 1-3 years of experience with PHP
- 1-3 years of experience with SQL & Data Model Design
- Working experience with Git based source control
- Demonstrated experience delivering customer-facing technical work (implementation, professional services, solutions engineering, or similar), including translating requirements into working solutions.
- Strong troubleshooting and production support skills: can reproduce issues reliably, communicate expected vs. actual behavior, and drive fixes through to verification.
Preferred Skills:
- Familiarity with Model View Controller design pattern
- Advanced knowledge of Totara, Moodle, Drupal and/or WordPress Development a strong plus
- Experience working with the Atlassian toolset (Jira and Confluence) a strong plus
- Prior experience with Learning Management Systems is a plus
- Strong business-to-technology translation skills to identify solutions that drive business value
- Exposure to the BeHat Testing Framework
- AWS Services (Code family, Lambda, IAM, ACM, Etc…)
Qualities of Success:
- Customer-first operator: clear communicator, documents decisions and implementation steps, and closes loops with stakeholders.
- Pragmatic about speed vs. risk: ships quick wins safely, escalates early when work belongs with R&D, and follows through to resolution.
- Creativity and flexible, responding quickly to evolving markets and opportunity challenges
- Comfortable with ambiguity and fast-moving customer needs; can make good calls with incomplete information.
- Entrepreneurial and prepared to ignore the mediocre and target the highest levels of success
- Hunger to learn about Totara Products and become an evangelist
- High ownership: flags risks early, follows through, and keeps stakeholders aligned through to completion.
- Manages work efficiently (Software development flow, preparedness, self-directed)
Benefits and Perks:
- Enhanced Parental Leave
- Professional Development Opportunities
- Annual Wellbeing Allowance
- New Joiner home working set-up allowance
- Additional Paid Leave: Birthday off, Working days between Christmas and New Years Eve
