From decarbonizing mines to modernizing electric grids and building the infrastructure that fuels communities, we’re powering the world. Our clients come to us with their biggest, most complex challenges because that’s where we thrive. And we’re looking for problem solvers, high achievers, and visionaries to help us.

Join us for a chance to grow professionally at one of the world’s top design firms while building our clean energy future.

Your Opportunity

We are currently looking to add a full time intermediate-level Civil/Hydrologic and Hydraulic Engineer to our hydropower and dams group within the energy business line in Southern California (Pasadena, Irvine, or San Diego offices). If working on the most challenging water and natural resources projects around the world, building on your talents through a premier knowledge-sharing culture, and connecting across borders with some of the world’s top talent appeals to you, join us. Some exciting local Southern California projects we have worked on include hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, modeling, and design for San Vicente, Santa Anita, and Big Tujunga dams.

The successful candidate will build on their existing technical knowledge base to work on challenging and diverse tasks for dams and hydropower projects, conveyance tunnels, and water resource projects for a variety of domestic and international clients. The successful candidate will be working in conjunction with other engineers and geologists on multi-discipline teams to support project development including feasibility studies, detailed design, and construction support. The successful candidate should be able to work independently and with small and large teams to apply critical thinking skills to solve technical issues and develop project-specific solutions. The position will provide stimulating career growth opportunities including mentoring of less experienced staff.

The position has the option to work a hybrid schedule and may require travel to project sites.

Key responsibilities may include a combination of the following tasks, but not all are required.

  • Perform civil, hydrologic, and hydraulic engineering analyses and modeling for dam, hydroelectric, and other energy-related projects including dam breach and inundation analysis, intake structure design, and spillway design.
  • Conduct hydrologic and hydraulic modeling using programs such as HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS (1D and 2D), LifeSim, and/or FLO2D.
  • Prepare engineering designs through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats.
  • Prepare construction drawings and specifications for design components including spillways, drop chutes, energy dissipation, and other hydraulic structures.
  • Assist with feasibility studies by conducting research to assess issues and develop solutions.
  • Prepare technical reports including field reports, technical memoranda, computation packages, feasibility reports, design and evaluation reports, construction drawings, and specifications.
  • Prepare basic quantity and cost estimates.
  • Provide engineering support for projects during construction.
  • Participate in Construction Quality Assurance including the review of shop drawings and submittals, response to request for information, prepare site observation reports, and perform other contract administration tasks.
  • Follow safe work practices and adhere to company guidelines for planning and executing work in a safe manner.
  • Provide leadership, coordination, and ownership of tasks from initiation to successful completion.
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams to undertake infrastructure projects related to their planning, design, and engineering.
  • Work in conjunction with engineers and other professionals to solve project challenges, performing design calculations as required.
  • Develop familiarity with regulatory agency requirements, technical design standards, and industry standards and guidelines.
  • Attend project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants.
  • Implement Stantec quality control and quality assurance processes for project deliverables.
  • Provide mentoring, coaching, and training of less experienced professionals, as required.
  • Develop client management and business development skills, such as preparing proposals.
  • Participate in professional development and training activities.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
