The Keck School of Medicine (KSOM) Human Resources team plays a vital role in supporting our faculty, staff, and students. We provide guidance on HR functions, including policy interpretation, recruitment and onboarding, performance management, employee relations, payroll support, and leave administration. Position Overview
KSOM Human Resources is seeking a full-time Human Resources Generalist as part of a team who support faculty and staff leaves of absence, workers’ compensation, and transitional return-to-work accommodations. This role is responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance, providing high-quality employee support, coordinating with internal partners and external vendors, and mitigating institutional risk.

The Human Resources Generalist administers and oversees employee leaves of absence in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, collective bargaining agreements, and institutional policies, while delivering consistent, accurate, and compassionate service to employees and managers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and support leave of absence cases, the administration of leave of absence policies and case management workflow. Receive and respond to leave of absence and disability accommodation requests, as well as prepare and distribute required documentation. 
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local leave laws and regulations.
  • Assist with the development, application and interpretation of human resources policies and procedures for KSOM stakeholders. 
  • Collaborate with central university offices to facilitate the effective administration and delivery of HR services; coordinate with Payroll, Benefits, and external leave and disability vendors.
  • Monitor changes in leave legislation and recommend policy or process updates as needed.
  • Generate reports for monitoring and assisting with performing projections, statistical and trend analyses. 
  • Identify and escalate potential compliance risks or complex cases to HR leadership or legal counsel

Must Have:  

  • Bachelor’s Degree.  Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education. 
  • Three years of direct Human Resource experience.       
  • Strong critical thinking, judgment and decision-making ability, including the ability to weigh short and long-term costs and benefits of a potential decision and/or action. 
  • Excellent communication skills including refined writing skills and the ability to speak clearly and concisely. 
  • Proven ability to handle sensitive and challenging conversations and interpersonal relationships. 
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately document conversations and events.
  • Strong understanding of state and federal employment legislation including FLSA, ADA, EEOC, FMLA and CFRA.  
  • Strong technical skills and learning aptitude. 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time, prioritize workload, meet deadlines, and follow through with high volume caseload and projects.  
  • Ability to work well under pressure and handle conflict with a high degree of professionalism. 
  • Excellent time management skills, organizational skills and a strong bias for action.  
  • Consistently function in a positive, friendly and helpful demeanor by phone and in person.  Excellent customer service skills and work orientation. 
  • Team oriented and collaborative work style.

Remote Work Schedule:
Hybrid.  On-site during initial transition and training phase. 

The hourly rate range for this position is $37.23 - $47.22. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.

Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree
Addtional Education Requirements Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education
Minimum Experience: 3 years
Minimum Skills: Directly related human resources generalist experience. Working knowledge of principles and practices of human resources administration. Knowledge of human resources workforce planning, recruitment, hiring, performance management, compensation administration, benefits, training and development, disciplinary actions, employee relations, equal opportunity, disability, workers compensation, organizational development and information systems. Knowledge of relevant federal, state and local laws and regulations. Demonstrated effective oral and written communications and excellent interpersonal skills.
Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree
Preferred Certifications: Professional in Human Resources - PHR Senior Professional in Human Resources - SPHR SHRM (Human Resource Certification) SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP
Preferred Experience: 4 years
Preferred Skills: Human resources generalist experience in a university or similar setting.
