The role covers HR due diligence and onboarding for acquisitions of small veterinary hospitals, talent acquisition, employee relations, compensation management, employee engagement, learning and development, payroll, and benefits. As a member of the core leadership team, the HR Director will build the company’s HR function and its initial benefits offering, working closely with the CEO and COO.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Build the overall organizational HR strategy in coordination with the CEO and COO.
  • Perform HR due diligence and onboarding in support of AVP’s mergers and acquisitions.
  • Cultivate vendor relationships and make strategic decisions on platform-wide benefits partners in coordination with the CEO and COO.
  • Oversee the rollout and ongoing administration of platform-wide benefits.
  • Partner with practice leaders to address staffing needs, using all available sourcing methods to direct candidates to practices with open roles (e.g., veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and support staff).
  • Provide direct generalist HR support to acquired practices.
  • Develop the internal HR team, including assessing staffing needs on an ongoing basis and recommending team expansion to the CEO and COO.
  • Bring an agile, entrepreneurial approach to AVP’s needs, including contributing to non-HR initiatives as a member of senior leadership in an early-stage company until roles become more specialized.
  • Build direct hiring pipelines for veterinarians and support staff, including representing AVP at career fairs, conferences, and industry events.
  • Identify, implement, and champion AI tools that improve the efficiency and quality of HR functions, including recruiting, onboarding, employee communications, and process automation.
  • Use project management systems such as Notion to plan, track, and document HR projects, including acquisition onboarding, benefits rollouts, and open enrollment.

Requirements

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of HR leadership experience.
  • Corporate human resources experience, including building, rolling out, and maintaining employee payroll and benefits programs.
  • Experience working for a multi-location business operating across multiple states (e.g., a corporate consolidation group or chain of medical offices). This is required.
  • Understanding of HR functions in mergers and acquisitions, including HR due diligence and employee onboarding.
  • Experience sourcing, vetting, and onboarding candidates.
  • An agile, enthusiastic, collaborative, and entrepreneurial mindset, with the ability to contribute proactively to a rapidly growing startup where internal frameworks are actively being built and refined.
  • Enthusiasm for building and leading your own “dream team” HR department.
  • Understanding of HR ethics and professionalism, labor and employment law, budget development and planning, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to build and execute scalable processes and systems within a growing organization.
  • Extensive knowledge of AI tools and their practical application to HR functions, such as recruiting, onboarding, employee communications, and process automation.
  • Experience with project management systems, including Notion.
  • A love of animals and an appreciation for the important mission of veterinary healthcare companies and the healthcare workers who deliver that care.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in healthcare-specific human resources, particularly veterinary healthcare.
  • Advanced HR certifications (e.g., SHRM-CP/SCP, PHR/SPHR). Certifications are not required but will be considered in our holistic evaluation of candidates, so please note any relevant certifications on your resume/CV.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
