Who We Are

Nuro believes self-driving vehicles are the most immediate and profound opportunity for AI to drive positive change in the physical world. Safer streets, more time for what matters, and easier access to the world around us, that’s why we’re building a universal autonomy platform: self-driving for all roads and all rides.
Founded in 2016, Nuro is a physical AI company developing Level 4 autonomous driving technology for a wide range of vehicles, use cases, and markets. Powered by the Nuro Driver™, our universal autonomy platform enables the global mobility ecosystem to deploy autonomy at scale, from robotaxis and logistics fleets to personal vehicles.
With years of real-world deployment experience and a flexible, partner-led business model, Nuro is working toward a future where millions of autonomous vehicles powered by our technology help make everyday life safer, easier, and more connected.
Nuro has raised over $2B in capital from Uber, NVIDIA, Google, Softbank, Fidelity, T. Rowe Price, and other leading investors.

About the Role

We are looking for a HR Business Partner (HRBP) to support Nuro’s rapidly scaling Autonomous Vehicle Operator (AVO) organization, a critical workforce driving our software testing, safety, and milestone delivery. As we hire hundreds of new operators into shift-based, high-accountability roles, this HRBP will focus heavily on employee relations, safety culture, first-line manager enablement, and operational HR support.

You’ll partner deeply with Ops leadership to ensure our teams are supported, risks are mitigated, and our frontline employees have the clarity, tools, and environment needed to perform safely and effectively. This is a highly hands-on role that blends strategic thought partnership with day-to-day field HR, including supporting investigations, performance coaching, safety escalations, and workforce planning.

The ideal candidate has experience supporting large hourly/non-exempt workforces, thrives in fast-moving operational environments, and can balance empathy, fairness, and business judgment while scaling systems that enable consistency and excellence.

About the Work
  • Serve as the day-to-day HR partner for our Operations workforce (Autonomous Vehicle Operators, Fleet, Safety, Program Management, etc.), focusing on real-time employee support across multiple shifts, including overnight operations.
  • Handle a high volume of employee relations matters—attendance issues, interpersonal conflicts, conduct concerns, policy questions, and incident follow-ups, ensuring consistency and fairness across sites.
  • Support Safety and Ops teams during road-collision calls and other safety-related escalations, ensuring timely documentation, communication, and next steps.
  • Provide frontline supervisors and leads with guidance on documentation, coaching conversations, and navigating routine HR matters.
  • Assist with key HR processes for a large, hourly workforce, including onboarding touchpoints, workplace support needs, and shift-based communication updates.
  • Spot patterns across teams and shifts to surface early signals related to safety, performance, or engagement.
  • Partner closely with the primary HRBP and cross-functional teams (Workplace, Safety, Legal, People Ops) to ensure a seamless and consistent employee experience.
  • Partner with Talent Management on performance programs, engagement efforts, and manager enablement tailored to a frontline workforce.
About You
  • 4+ years HRBP or HR Generalist experience supporting hourly, contingent, or temp-to-hire populations in operations, logistics, manufacturing, warehouse, or similar environments.
  • Strong experience with high-volume ER, including investigations, documentation, and decision-making under time-sensitive operational conditions.
  • Comfortable with onsite, shift-based environments, including occasional overnight or early morning shift support.
  • Known for building quick trust with both workers and frontline managers—balancing empathy with clarity and accountability.
  • Strong understanding of California employment law, particularly for high-volume non-exempt workforces.
  • Process-minded: able to build lightweight, scalable approaches without slowing down operations.
  • Calm, practical, and steady during safety escalations, staffing surges, or complex ER situations.
  • High learning agility—you can quickly understand the operator workflow and how it ties into vehicle testing, milestones, and safety.
Bonus Points
  • Experience supporting operations in autonomy, transportation, logistics, or industrial/safety-critical environments.
  • Experience working directly with safety teams or supporting populations where incident reporting and behavior standards are critical.
  • Experience supporting multi-site, shift-based, or 24/7 operational environments.
  • HR certifications (PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP/SCP).

At Nuro, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. For this position, the reasonably expected base pay range is between $99,220 and $149,330 for the level at which this job has been scoped. Your base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills. In the event that you are considered for a different level, a higher or lower pay range would apply. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, equity, and a competitive benefits package.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
