The Safety Manager position is held accountable to the Human Resources Director for achieving the safety goals of the department and company, which is to reduce the severity and costs of accidents, claims, and reduce preventable accidents. Ensure compliance with all Federal and State DOT trucking regulations. This is a primary facilitator position to bridge the gap between Operations & Safety within the organization to promote and facilitate a safe working environment and satisfactory DOT ratings.

What You'll Do

  • Full understanding of DOT HOS, CSA initiatives and DOT Safety/Compliance Regulations
  • The maintenance and retention of all program documentation as required by DOT regulations
  • Lead and oversee all aspects of monitoring, development, implementation, standardization (where appropriate), and management of the company’s DOT Trucking Compliance Programs, including
  • CMV Files and DOT Driver Qualification Files.
  • DOT Drug/Alcohol Programs, Pre-contract, Post accident, Random / Reasonable Suspicion.
  • Develop and implement standardized processes for driver background checks utilizing PSP, MVR and Criminal Reporting.
  • Ensure drivers are compliant and possess a current, validated DOT Physicals.
  • Review, approve/disqualify new driver applications considering company’s minimum qualification standards.
  • Assist with coordinating new driver on boarding and current driver retraining/corrective action regarding safety standards and processes.
  • Review pending and upcoming changes to Federal & State DOT trucking regulations to ensure the company is prepared for future compliance requirements.
  • Maintaining records to report additions and removal of drivers and trucks to insurance policies.
  • Communicate with and regularly review our insurance providers and policies to ensure proper billing and competitive insurance rates. Running loss report notice annually.
  • Investigate, document, negotiate and coordinate all unresolved accident and freight claims. Ongoing reporting of all findings to the company’s insurance providers, counsel, and leadership group.
  • Processing insurance claims and prepping for yearly insurance renewals.
  • Checking FMCSA portal daily for newly uploaded inspection and accidents; Issuing corrective action notices
  • Updating and checking SaferSys site for violations and accidents, if needed submitting DataQ reviews for invalid inspection or accidents as needed.
  • Updating MCS-150 Biennial form annually - or as instructed or required.
  • Developing, implementing an effective plan, while coordinating with our Operations Management to ensure optimal FMCSA scores.
  • Annually filing 391.27 driver’s certification of violations, 391.25 annual review of driving record for all drivers and owner operators.
  • Seek out industry best practices and more effective and efficient methods to achieve operational excellence in Incident Prevention and DOT Trucking Compliance.
  • Attend safety seminars and training courses to stay current with regulation & compliance technologies.

  • Extensive experience and knowledge of transportation, environmental and occupational health and safety, along with an established track record of success.
  • Training, documenting, and maintaining medical certifications, DOT, and FMCSA requirements for all commercial fleet drivers promoting over the road safety, HOS compliance, cargo security, and brand protection.
  • Perform monthly comprehensive facility safety audits to ensure continual improvement.
  • Compile, analyze, and distribute weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual safety reports to management.
  • Provide managers/supervisors the necessary training to obtain detailed descriptions, corrective actions and follow through to ensure corrective actions are implemented related to accidents, near misses, injuries or property damage.
  • Assist risk management with all accident investigation.

What You'll Need to Have

  • The candidate must have demonstrated computer skills, including a proficiency in using common word processing software, Excel-spreadsheet software, database applications, project and presentation software, email. Knowledge of commercial trucking is required.
  • Must understand and manage PSP transportation, CSA process and procedures, MVRs, and DOT drug testing requirements.
