Position Summary:

The Head of People will work directly with leadership to find, develop, motivate and retain the team at KCRW. Additionally, the Head of People will be responsible for ensuring that Racial Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are at the heart of all of KCRW’s business strategies and will serve as a peer to the executive leadership team in this capacity. This position will play a pivotal role in fostering an engaged company culture for our team of 140+ employees, working cross-functionally to support the team at every level. This position reports directly to the Chief Operations Officer and will work closely with the President, Chief Financial Officer and HR Manager.

This is a full-time, managerial, exempt position.

Position Responsibility:

  • Serve as the owner for all systems, processes, and issues related to culture, HR, and recruiting
  • Work with leadership to execute against a strategic DEI plan to be developed under the guidance of a DEI consultant 
  • Develop accountability measures around justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion that are used to report to the board of directors and to the organization as a whole
  • Drive initiatives related to performance management, learning and development, and employee rewards and recognition
  • Provide guidance to managers and team members around employment issues
  • Coach managers around communication and feedback, career paths, and compliance
  • Lead recruiting efforts, including ATS management and talent acquisition processes
  • Oversee employee onboarding and offboarding
  • Advise on labor relations and provide strategic oversight and leadership on union matters
  • Support positive union-company relations, including working closely with union leadership
  • Support management of health benefit plans and wellness programs
  • Act as subject-matter expert for CA labor laws for both exempt and non-exempt employee groups
  • Collaborate with our leadership team on crafting and operationalizing policies
  • Serve as a role model for the company's culture by embodying the highest standards of behavior and ethics

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • 8+ years of relevant experience in People Operations/HR/Recruiting, preferably in a media organization
  • Certifications as a SHRM-SCP or SPHR, preferred
  • Experience in implementing DEI programs and leading cultural transformation
  • Experience in facilitating learning and development opportunities 
  • A track record of the ability to mediate crucial conversations in the workplace
  • Experience in labor relations in a unionized environment
  • Familiarity with tools like Ease, ADP, and Jobvite
  • Ability to handle confidential information with the utmost sensitivity and professionalism
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to think strategically about the big picture and how to make it better
