Head of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

What This Position Is All About

The Head of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion will be responsible for developing and executing DE&I strategies and is passionate about building inclusive cultures and attracting and developing top talent from varied backgrounds and experiences. Reporting directly to the Chief People Officer and being a strategic partner to the Executive Leadership Team, you will serve as an advisor for all, this encompasses our Guests, Team Members, and Vendor community; in the areas of diversity, inclusion, and equity.

You Will

  • Develop a strategy in partnership with our DE&I consultant that aligns DE&I goals with sweetgreen’s business strategy
  • Further integrate our DE&I beliefs and values throughout our culture through innovative solutions that broaden and advance the team member experience
  • Be a strong voice for DE&I across our internal sweetgreen community to guide the implementation of strategic initiatives, including the creation of a culture for equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Partner with our external consultant to understand and synthesize insights from DEI surveying and auditing work 
  • Provide strategic direction for training initiatives on cultural competency, gender differences, disability, sexual harassment, building a climate of equity and inclusion, and other topics designed to increase awareness and support of equity and inclusion values, and maintaining compliance with applicable laws
  • Supports and advocates employee resource groups and partners with them to increase their voice and impact within sweetgreen
  • Establish and maintain an internal audit and reporting system to allow for effective measurement of programs
  • Develop and recommend strategies for working with external community and cultural organizations in partnership with the Head of Social Impact & Inclusion
  • Build relationships and coaches key leaders to create awareness, support, and advocacy for diversity and inclusion efforts
  • Integrate key concepts of belonging, inclusion, and diversity into existing corporate and independent consultant programs, policies and practices
  • Work closely with the executive team to inform their personal leadership and organization strategy to advance function and company goals
  • Influence our diversity, inclusion and belonging story collaboratively with our Social Impact, Creative and Brand Marketing Teams
  • Create and implement company-wide and field facing business specific diversity strategic plans
  • Partner with Head of Talent Acquisition to identify policies and processes required for the attraction and inclusion of diverse talent
  • Partner closely with the People Team to integrate inclusion, diversity, and bias mitigation concepts into learning and employee development programs

  • Demonstrated cultural awareness and agility and ability to build trust, credibility and navigate a complex landscape
  • A storyteller with exceptional oral and written communication skills with experience in multiple communication modes, including social media, with the ability to articulate the importance of inclusion and diversity to the broader educational mission of higher education institutions
  • Experience conducting efficient and accurate historical research and reference services

You Also Have

  • 7+ years of experience advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in a complex, public sector organization
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to weave in diversity, inclusion, and belonging into company objectives
  • Ability to quickly build trust, influence, and partner with leaders and team members at all levels
  • Demonstrated ability of developing a diversity, inclusion, and belonging framework that connected to an organization’s mission and business strategy and valued approaching problems from a perspective of growth and scalability
  • Experience within a retail, restaurant or hospitality environment with decentralized hourly workforce
  • A degree in social justice, education, sociology, social anthropology, public administration, human resource management or other related field will be considered an asset
