We are launching a new intellectual-yet-accessible video series inspired by the Dissect podcast model, bringing deep storytelling, lyrical and musical analysis, and cultural commentary to the R&B genre.

We’re looking for a charismatic, thoughtful, and highly knowledgeable Host to be the voice and face of our new R&B music analysis series. The ideal candidate blends scholarly curiosity with approachable delivery, making complex ideas about songwriting, production, and cultural context engaging for a broad audience. If the candidate chosen is based in the Los Angeles, CA metro area, we’d like to shoot at our production facility, where we have professional equipment and production resources available. If the chosen candidate is outside of Los Angeles, CA, we will provide and set up all necessary production equipment for in-home shoots.

This is not a news-reading role, we want someone who can lead deep dives into songs, albums, and cultural moments that tell compelling stories, and guide viewers to new levels of appreciation for R&B music.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Research & Script Development: Shape and write episode narratives, while collaborating with our producers to ensuring accuracy and depth.
  • On-Camera & Voice Performance: Deliver polished, energetic, and emotionally engaging presentations for YouTube and social media formats.
  • Interview Guests: Conduct thoughtful, well-researched conversations with artists, producers, songwriters, historians, and other experts (when necessary).
  • Cultural Context Building: Connect the music to its historical, social, and artistic roots in a way that resonates with modern audiences.
  • Collaborate with Creative Team: Work with video editors, sound designers, and graphic artists to bring episodes to life visually and sonically.
  • Adapt Across Formats: Adjust tone and style for long-form YouTube episodes and short-form social clips.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Deep Knowledge of R&B Music: History, influential albums/artists, lyrical trends, production techniques, and cultural moments.
  • Music Theory Proficiency: Understanding of chord progressions, harmony, rhythm, and arrangement to support in-depth musical analysis.
  • Strong Communication Skills: Ability to articulate complex musical ideas in a clear, engaging, and relatable way.
  • Storytelling Ability: Experience in weaving narrative arcs that hold audience attention.
  • On-Camera & Voice Talent: Comfortable and confident in front of the camera and behind the mic.
  • Research Savvy: Skilled in sourcing credible information and identifying unique analytical angles.
  • Collaborative Spirit: Works well with creative and production teams under deadlines.

Preferred Experience

  • Background in music journalism, podcasting, broadcasting, or hosting.
  • Experience as a musician, songwriter, or music educator.
  • Prior work in cultural criticism or music analysis.
  • Experience with scripting or content writing.
