Why Blee:

Blee is an AI-first marketing content compliance platform. PayPal, NerdWallet, and Brex already trust us. We're YC-backed, founded by an ex-Adobe marketing ops leader and former lawyer, and we're defining a category that didn't exist two years ago—across Fintech, Financial Services, CPG, Travel, and Life Sciences..

With offices in San Francisco and New York, we value in-person work but offer remote-opportunities for the right people. No matter where you join us, you can expect quarterly off-sites and opportunities to join other offices when you feel it’s important. You’ll be joining a team that values clarity, ownership, and shared responsibility—and is focused on building something that genuinely improves how teams work.

The Role

This is the Head of Legal Engineering role for an attorney who wants to shape how legal judgment works inside an AI product. Legal Engineering sits at the center of Blee's platform: it decides how legal requirements and customer guidance become rules our AI can apply reliably, and it judges whether those rules perform well in practice. You will own this function and take it to the next level. That means making our methods sharper, our quality loop more rigorous, and our legal frameworks able to scale across a fast-growing base of enterprise customers.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead Legal Engineering. Set the function's direction, priorities, and standards, and grow the team as Blee scales.

  • Own Blee's legal logic. Shape how legal and regulatory requirements become reliable, scalable AI review across our customer base.

  • Build Blee's voice in the market. Represent Blee externally through speaking, writing, events, and other thought leadership on AI, legal, and compliance.

  • Work directly with customers’ legal and compliance teams. Join customer calls to understand their specific content analysis requirements and translate them into how Blee’s AI evaluates content.

  • Enable Implementation and Customer Success. Give our customer-facing teams the legal and compliance context they need to implement Blee effectively, support customers, and know when to escalate questions.

  • Drive AI quality. Measure and continuously improve the accuracy and reliability of Blee's AI review.

  • Keep our legal logic current. Make sure Blee keeps pace with changing regulations, customer guidance, and best practices.

  • Represent legal and compliance in product development. Partner with Product to make sure Blee reflects how legal and compliance teams actually work.

  • Raise the bar. Set the standards and best practices that keep Blee's legal work consistent, high quality, and scalable.

  • Support Blee's legal function. Work alongside Blee's in-house legal team on company legal matters, including reviewing and negotiating commercial agreements.

Who You Are

  • A lawyer with sharp judgment. You can read unclear guidance, see where it conflicts, and decide how it should apply.

  • Fluent in AI. You use AI tools every day, understand what they can and can't do, and get excited about making them work better rather than being skeptical of them.

  • Clear and credible with legal and compliance leaders. You're comfortable presenting to GCs, CCOs, and senior marketing stakeholders.

  • A systems thinker. You look past the individual question to the framework behind it, and you design approaches that hold up across many customers, regulations, and use cases.

  • Data-driven about quality. You look for patterns instead of chasing individual flags, and you measure whether your changes actually helped.

  • A leader who raises the standard. You're excited to take a high-impact function and make it stronger as Blee grows.

Who You'll Work With

You will work closely with Blee's product, implementation, customer success, AI engineering, and legal teams. You'll also work regularly with the legal, compliance, and marketing teams at some of the world's largest organizations.

Requirements

  • JD and active bar admission in at least one U.S. jurisdiction

  • 5+ years of legal experience, including significant work in advertising and marketing law, consumer protection, or regulatory compliance, at a law firm, in-house, or at a regulator

  • Hands-on experience reviewing marketing and advertising materials for claims, disclosures, and substantiation

  • Working knowledge of relevant frameworks, such as FTC advertising and endorsement guidance, UDAP/UDAAP, and financial-services marketing rules (e.g., FINRA 2210, the SEC Marketing Rule, Reg Z/DD)

  • Real experience using AI in your legal work, and readiness to walk through specific tools, workflows, and results during interviews

  • A strong analytical and writing record: you can explain complex legal reasoning in structured, plain language

  • Experience leading people or cross-functional initiatives

Nice to have:

  • Experience in legal technology, legal operations, or at a venture-backed company

  • Experience writing product requirements, designing test cases, or evaluating AI or model output

  • Familiarity with regulated industries such as financial services, fintech, insurance, or healthcare

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
