Head of Bitcoin Engineering

As the Head of Bitcoin Engineering, you will be responsible for leading and growing the engineering organization responsible for all of Block's bitcoin-based products and will report directly to Block's overall head of engineering. This leader will be responsible for guiding a large, distributed team of engineers and managers delivering trusted, scalable, and compliant systems that make Bitcoin accessible to millions of people and businesses globally.
You Will:

• Lead the engineering organization powering all Bitcoin-related initiatives across Block's ecosystems.
• Define the technical vision and roadmap for Bitcoin integration across payments, custody, and self-custody products, aligning with Block's broader mission of economic empowerment.
• Partner with the CashApp and Square team to deliver Bitcoin related features, product and services.
• Build upon Block's position as one of the largest operators on the Lightning Network, enabling low-cost, real-time Bitcoin transactions for millions of users.
• Drive innovation in secure custody solutions, AI-driven payment intelligence, stablecoin interoperability, and decentralized identity (DID) frameworks.
• Partner closely with product, compliance, and security teams to ensure the safe and compliant expansion of Bitcoin features across regulated markets.
• Champion scalability, resilience, and availability across systems handling billions in digital assets and payments.
• Build and nurture a world-class engineering culture grounded in technical excellence, open collaboration, and accountability.
• Serve as a public-facing technical ambassador, representing Block's Bitcoin work across the open-source, crypto, and engineering communities.

You Have:

• 15+ years of experience in technology, including extensive leadership of large, distributed engineering teams.
• Demonstrated excellence in cross-team collaboration, with experience building systems and relationships that align large, distributed teams and accelerate decision-making.
• Deep technical understanding of Bitcoin, blockchain protocols, cryptography, and financial infrastructure systems.
• Proven track record of delivering consumer-scale financial or crypto products used by millions globally.
• Experience architecting institutional-grade custody or wallet systems safeguarding billions in assets.
• Demonstrated ability to lead organizations spanning multiple geographies and time zones.
• A thought leader in the Bitcoin and crypto ecosystems, engaged in the ongoing evolution of decentralized financial technology.
• Strong executive presence and ability to influence technical and strategic decisions at the highest level.
• Familiarity with the unique regulatory, reliability, and trust challenges associated with serving both banked and underbanked populations.

Preferred:

• Experience in fintech, payments, or crypto infrastructure at scale.
• Prior involvement in open-source Bitcoin or Lightning development.
• Deep interest in emerging innovations such as AI-powered agents, stablecoin settlement, and decentralized identity.

The successful candidate's starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.
