Welcome, and thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer Guide for this year's Scholars and Guides program!

Guides play a vital role in supporting Scholars by providing mentorship, guidance, and professional networking opportunities before and during the conference. As a Guide, you’ll help Scholars navigate the Ruby and Rails community and maximize their conference experience.

What Guides Do:

We’re looking for Guides who are familiar with the Ruby and/or Rails community and who can offer valuable insights to new Rubyists. As a Guide, you will:

  • Mentor Scholars through their mini-projects, offering guidance and support.

  • Recommend conference talks that align with your Scholar’s interests and skill levels.

  • Introduce your Scholar to influential developers who can help them grow in their area of interest.

  • Share feedback and advice on building a career in the Ruby/Rails world.

  • Attend 3 mandatory meet-ups:

    • Speakers & Scholars Reception

    • Pre-conference meeting (Zoom)

    • Post-conference Lunchtime Retro (on-site)

Conference Details:

Ruby Central hosted events, RubyConf and RubyConf, are comprised of 3 days. This year, RubyConf 2026 will take place in Las Vegas, NV from July 14th ~ July 16th. The event will be held over three days:

  • Day 1 & Day 3: Conference talks

  • Day 2: Workshops, hack-a-thon, talks and community activities

Note: This is a volunteer position. While we would love to offer a fully gifted ticket, we may not be able to do so due to financial constraints and current sponsorship coverage.

Application Deadlines:

The application deadline for RubyConf is Tuesday, March 17th, 2026 11:59pm EST. After this date, we will reach out to all applicants to confirm their interest. You will be notified of your application status approximately 2-3 weeks after the deadline.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at [email protected] or visit our website at rubyconf.org.

Thank you for applying to be a Guide!

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
