Job Description:

Johnson & Johnson MedTech’s Polyphonic team is shaping the future of digital surgery—building software products for hospitals, clinicians, researchers, and patients that deliver a connected peri-operative experience.

The Polyphonic team is recruiting for a Global Design Leader to define and design a next-generation surgical data & AI platform – Polyphonic AI Lab. This platform will manage the end-to-end lifecycle of multimodal surgical data and enable teams to develop, deploy, and scale ML/AI models in regulated healthcare environments.

This is a remote role available in all cities/ states within North America. While specific cities are listed in the Locations section for reference, please note that they are examples only and do not limit your application. We invite candidates from any location to apply.

In this role, you will champion human-centered design and lead the user experience and interface design of Polyphonic AI Lab. You will partner with product management to define the platform’s long-term product vision and roadmap. And you will partner with engineers, data scientists, clinicians, and external technology providers to drive the delivery and expansion of a scalable product and service ecosystem.

Key responsibilities
  • Lead user and market research to uncover user needs, validate opportunities, and translate insights into new product ideas

  • Build a cohesive and scalable user experience vision and roadmap for AI Lab in close collaboration with AI Lab’s product management and engineering teams

  • Lead a team of strategists and product designers from research to ideation, prototyping, and production-ready designs across releases

  • Define design principles and interaction patterns for emerging multimodal UX paradigms, including AI-assisted workflows

  • Integrate with and contribute to our design system — components, patterns, and guidelines that are tailored to AI/ML tooling and can scale across AI Lab

  • Build strong networks with subject matter experts and cross-functional teams to align on design priorities and accelerate learning and change management

  • Ensure solutions are developed with a strong focus on quality, cybersecurity, privacy, compliance, and responsible AI.

  • Stay current on trends across AI, multimodal data platforms, computer vision, digital surgery, and sensor-enabled intelligence, and incorporate insights into the product design

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree (required) or Master’s degree (preferred) in Design or Design-related field.

  • 10+ years of experience in product design and design management delivering platform solutions—ideally in healthcare, digital health, and/or AI-enabled product environments.

  • High design craft and do-muscle with proven leadership of design teams delivering enterprise-scale digital products and platforms.

  • Demonstrated teamwork and strong cross-functional leadership and ability to influence across technical, clinical, business, and executive teams.

  • Experience operating in regulated environments, with knowledge of quality, privacy, cybersecurity, and compliance expectations.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate strategy into clear, actionable plans.

  • Ability to travel up to 25% (U.S. and international).

Above all else

  • Friendly, thoughtful and perpetually curious

  • Humble to your core with a sharp emotional intelligence

  • Able to build trust, even when communicating a dissenting point of view

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
