One of our clients, a well-established and growing law firm in Los Angeles, California, is seeking a General Liability Defense Attorney with 3–5 years of direct insurance defense experience to join their litigation team.

Position Overview

The General Liability Defense Attorney will manage a diverse caseload of general liability and insurance defense matters from inception through resolution. The ideal candidate has experience representing insurance carriers and insured clients in civil litigation, possesses strong analytical and advocacy skills, and is comfortable handling cases independently while collaborating with a team of experienced litigators.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of general liability and insurance defense matters.
  • Represent insurance carriers, businesses, and insured clients throughout all phases of litigation.
  • Draft pleadings, motions, discovery requests and responses, and other legal documents.
  • Conduct legal research and develop case strategy.
  • Take and defend depositions of parties, witnesses, and expert witnesses.
  • Attend court hearings, mediations, arbitrations, and settlement conferences.
  • Communicate regularly with clients, insurance adjusters, opposing counsel, and experts.
  • Evaluate liability, damages, and litigation exposure.
  • Prepare cases for trial and assist with trial proceedings as needed.
  • Maintain accurate billing records and ensure compliance with litigation deadlines.

Required Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Active membership in the California State Bar in good standing.
  • 3–5 years of direct insurance defense experience (required).
  • Experience handling general liability litigation from inception through resolution.
  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Experience drafting pleadings, motions, and discovery.
  • Experience taking and defending depositions.
  • Excellent communication and client relationship management skills.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple litigation matters in a deadline-driven environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Trial preparation and courtroom experience.
  • Experience attending mediations and settlement conferences.
  • Familiarity with legal case management and billing software.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced insurance defense practice.
