Overview

Compound Planning is a high-growth digital family office with over $4B in AUM added since 2022. We serve entrepreneurs, professionals, and retirees with a powerful combination of personalized financial advisory and a proprietary technology platform. Our cross-functional team of advisors, tax experts, engineers, and operators is building the financial institution of the future.

We’re hiring a strategic and hands-on General Counsel to guide our legal posture, manage risk proactively, and support Compound’s continued growth. If you see how wealth ready to evolve and are eager to help shape that future—read on.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as the company’s lead legal advisor, providing clear and actionable counsel on a broad range of matters: use of AI within the product, contract negotiation, IP, employment law, vendor risk, regulatory oversight, and corporate governance.

  • Take a pragmatic and business-first approach to legal risk, understanding how to protect the firm while balancing potential exposure with strategic upside and moving the business forward—e.g., assessing whether revenue opportunities like launching a bill pay feature justify the associated legal risks.

  • Lead legal diligence and documentation for M&A and strategic partnerships, advisor transitions and disputes, and new product lines, ensuring alignment and outcomes with Compound’s long-term goals.

  • Operate with a high level of self-sufficiency, handling legal matters internally and leveraging outside counsel in an efficient manner. Manage and optimize external legal spend, including litigation and arbitration budgets.

  • Be a strategic partner on corporate structure and entity planning, ensuring we’re positioned to raise capital (equity or debt) and protected from a legal, tax, and regulatory perspective

  • Own the legal strategy for intellectual property, including trademarks, product protections, and prioritization of brand and platform assets.

  • Prioritize identifying opportunities to leverage generative AI and legal tech, defining a modern legal ops roadmap that improves internal efficiency and risk visibility.

  • Collaborate with the Chief Compliance Officer to maintain and evolve our proactive, best-in-class compliance program.

  • Champion a culture of compliance and ethical decision-making, particularly as we scale across regulatory frameworks and operational complexity.

Who You Are
  • JD from a top-tier U.S. law school; active bar membership in good standing.

  • Deep experience in financial services, particularly in startups or fast-scaling tech-forward environments.

  • In-depth knowledge of Investment Advisers Act, SEC regulations, and relevant state/federal oversight.

  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail—you don’t miss the fine print or underestimate the nuances.

  • Comfortable navigating ambiguous, novel legal situations, independently researching solutions, and turning insight into action.

  • A self-starter who thrives in a remote-first, high-trust environment with minimal oversight.

  • Strong communicator with the ability to translate legal complexity into business terms and build trust with cross-functional teams.

  • Practical in your risk management philosophy—you understand the difference between a blocker and a speed bump.

What It’s Like to Work at Compound

Compound operates with integrity, communicates with transparency, and takes accountability seriously. You’ll work closely with high-performing colleagues across functions - advisory, engineering, tax, and operations - who hold themselves, and each other to a high bar. It’s a culture built for people who want to move fast, build something that lasts, and thrive as part of a team aligned around a shared mission.

The $84 trillion wealth transfer happening over the next few decades will reshape the financial landscape. Compound is building for that future - and the General Counsel will be a key player in shaping how we get there.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
