Hi there! My name is Braelena (she/her), and I lead the Talent and People Operations team at GrayMatter Robotics. I love reading as much as I love investing in people, and I couldn't be more excited to add a new recruiter to my team!

When I started in 2023, we had 25 full-time employees; today, we've nearly quadrupled the team. So, as you can imagine, I'm eager to find a teammate who's excited to build from scratch, enjoys touching every aspect of the recruiting process, and — above all — shares my obsession with creating exceptional candidate experiences (almost as much as I’m obsessed with the color purple — which may or may not have influenced our switch to Ashby 😉).

💜 You'll love this role because...

  • There's an opportunity to build, break, and build again in a crazy-fast environment

  • We have each other's back; everyone deeply cares about and takes ownership of the recruiting process

  • Your manager believes in empowering her team to work autonomously and hates micromanaging (like I would have the time)

🙅🏾‍♀️ You'll hate this role because...

  • There's an opportunity to build, break, and build again in a crazy-fast environment (not a typo)

  • Priorities and talent profiles change rapidly so you need to over communicate and always assume positive intent...especially when it's not easy

  • You'll be the sole recruiter, which will test your grit, determination, and resilience

We know startups aren't for everyone — the lows can feel really low, but the highs are incredibly high. If you're someone who loves a challenge and hates negativity, join me on my mission to build a market-leading recruiting program, recognized for our ability to identify, attract, and retain the most sought-after talent.

Role & Responsibilities

As a Full Cycle Recruiter, you will join our Talent Acquisition & People Operations team onsite at our Carson, CA office to develop robust sourcing strategies and attract the very best problem solvers across industries. You will own the entire recruiting program at GrayMatter Robotics — responsible for the full recruiting lifecycle (sourcing candidates, screening resumes, conducting interviews, and negotiating offers) — while also building recruitment strategies, refining the evaluation process, and developing diversity initiatives.

  • Develop and implement recruiting strategies to attract top talent aligned with the company's goals and culture.

  • Exercise deep care and curate exceptional candidate experiences in an ever-changing, fast-paced environment.

  • Manage the entire recruitment lifecycle for 8–10 different roles at a time:

    • Recruit for both technical and non-technical roles such as but not limited to, Robotics Engineers with software, hardware and/or systems backgrounds, full stack engineers, technicians, program and project managers, sales, marketing, G&A, etc. across all areas (intern, early career, industry and leadership)

    • Source candidates through various channels, including job boards, social media, networking events, and employee referrals; develop a robust talent map.

    • Review resumes and applications to identify qualified candidates.

    • Conduct phone screens and interviews to assess candidates' skills, experience, and cultural fit.

    • Coordinate and schedule interviews with hiring managers and team members.

    • Extend job offers and negotiate terms with candidates.

  • Collaborate with hiring managers to understand their hiring needs and requirements.

  • Manage the candidate experience throughout the recruitment process, ensuring timely communication and a positive journey.

  • Lead and mentor a team of vendors, agencies and, eventually, in-house recruiters, providing guidance, support, and feedback to help them excel.

  • Stay informed about industry trends and best practices in recruitment and talent acquisition.

  • Assist with other HR-related tasks and projects, including but not limited to onboarding, interviewer training, employee events, and other initiatives as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 7+ years of industry experience in recruiting and talent acquisition, working directly with candidates in a sourcing or closing capacity.

  • 5+ years of technical recruiting experience, recruiting for niche or specialized roles.

  • 2+ years of experience in project management and/or large-scale event planning.

  • Demonstrated understanding of recruitment processes, sourcing techniques, and candidate assessment methods, reflected in strong performance evaluations or exceeding hiring goals.

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels.

  • Proven ability to think strategically and develop innovative solutions to recruitment challenges.

  • Must have authorization to work in the United States and maintain ongoing work authorization from time of hire through the duration of employment.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
