Title: Freelance Technical SEO + AEO Website Developer — California

StartWeb7 is seeking an independent freelance Technical SEO + AEO Website Developer for per-client assignments.

This is a hands-on developer role. You must be able to create, code, format, optimize, and publish SEO/AEO content directly on client websites—not simply provide recommendations or written content.

Responsibilities

  • Perform keyword, competitor, and content-gap research.
  • Create and publish optimized service and location pages.
  • Implement title tags, meta descriptions, headings, internal links, image alt text, canonical tags, redirects, and schema markup.
  • Make assigned technical SEO/AEO website improvements.
  • Work with WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, GoDaddy Website Builder, Webflow, HubSpot CMS, GitHub-hosted websites, and custom HTML/CSS/JavaScript websites.
  • Test completed work on desktop and mobile devices.
  • Provide live URLs or screenshots confirming that work was published.
  • Supply information needed for StartWeb7’s client reports.

Compensation

  • Essentials: $650 per active client per month.
  • Competitive: $1,200 per active client per month.
  • Each accepted client account is handled through a separately funded, fixed-price Upwork milestone.
  • Assignments depend on client demand and are not guaranteed.
  • You may accept or decline each offered account.

Requirements

  • Must be based in California.
  • Must operate an independently established freelance business or professional practice offering similar services to other clients.
  • Must use your own equipment, software, internet connection, and professional tools.
  • Must have hands-on website development and technical SEO experience.
  • Must be comfortable working independently across multiple website platforms.
  • Must agree to complete all hiring, contracting, communication, and payment through Upwork.

Required Work Samples

Your proposal or résumé must include links to at least two live websites where you personally completed SEO or technical SEO work.

For each website, briefly explain:

  1. What work you personally completed.
  2. Which website platform or coding technologies you used.
  3. Whether you directly implemented and published the work.
  4. Any measurable results you may disclose.

Applications without two relevant live website examples will not move forward. Do not submit confidential client information or work you did not personally complete.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
